WOODSTOCK CHAMBER ORCHESTRA OFFERS 1999-2000 CONCERT SERIES AT BARD COLLEGE

First Concert will be on Wednesday, September 29, at 8:00 p.m. Featuring the Music of Mendelssohn, Mozart, and Beethoven

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.-The Woodstock Chamber Orchestra (WCO) will offer the first concert in its 1999-2000 concert series at Bard College on Wednesday, September 29 at 8:00 p.m. The concert series, presented by The Bard Center, will be held in Olin Hall.

Under the artistic direction of Luis Garcia-Renart, professor of music at Bard College, the WCO is celebrating its twenty-first season. The September 29 concert will feature Mendelssohn's four movements from A Midsummer Night's Dream; Mozart's Concert for Clarinet in A, K. 622, featuring clarinet soloist Sara Phillips; and Beethoven's Symphony No. 8 in F, Op. 93.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:

Sara Phillips, clarinet soloist, is a Bard College senior. She recently performed Mozart's Concerto for Clarinet in A and Bela Bartok's Contrasts with the American Symphony Orchestra. She has also performanced also include Olivier Messiaen's Quartet for the End of Time and Joan Tower's "Petroushkate,." among other works. Phillips is the first recipient of the Hudson Valley Chamber Music Circle Award for Outstanding Music Majors from Bard College.

Luis Garcia-Renart, artistic director, was born in Barcelona, Spain, and studied at the Music School of the National University and the National Conservatory of Music in Mexico. From 1951 until 1956, his studies were supervised by Pablo Casals. He has appeared in solo performances in Europe, the former Soviet Union, Israel, and in North and South America. Prizes awarded Garcia-Renart include the Casals International Contests in Paris in 1956, in Xalpa in 1959, and in Israel in 1961. Garcia-Renart, professor of music at Bard College is also on the faculty at Vassar College; the Piatigorsky seminars at the University of Southern California; and the Yale Summer School of Music and Art. He is music director of the Cappella Festival Chamber Choir and Orchestra. He performs frequently as a soloist in recitals and chamber music both here and abroad.

The WCO concert series continues at Bard College on Wednesday, November 10, featuring a world premiere by composer and Bard College professor emeritus Benjamin Boretz; Rodrigo's Fantasia para un Gentilhombre (for guitar and orchestra); and Saint-Saens's Symphony in A major. On Wednesday, March 1, the WCO will feature two selections by Mozart, an overture and Symphonia Concertante for solo violin and viola. The series concludes on Wednesday, May 10, with a new work for piano and orchestra by Bard College faculty member, Richard Teitelbaum; a Rossini overture; and de Falla's El Amor Brujo with Jan Evers Davies as featured vocal soloist.
