AMERICAN SYMPHONY CHAMBER ORCHESTRA ANNOUNCES 1999-2000 BARD-VASSAR SERIES

The Music of Copland, Hindemith, and Mozart Will Be Featured at the First Concert on Friday, October 8 and Saturday, October 9

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.-The American Symphony Chamber Orchestra (ASCO), presented by The Bard Center, will begin its Bard-Vassar concert series on Friday, October 8, at Olin Hall, Bard College, and Saturday, October 9, at Skinner Hall, Vassar College, under the direction of Maestro Leon Botstein. The first concert features the music of Copland, Hindemith, and Mozart and begins at 8:00 p.m., with a preconcert talk at 7:00 p.m.

Selections to be performed during the first concert are Aaron Copland's Nonet; Paul Hindemith's Concerto for Horn; and Mozart's Symphony No. 40 in G Minor, K. 550.

"Particularly fine playing," Peter Goodman wrote in Newsday about featured soloist Jeffrey Lang, principal horn player of the American Symphony Orchestra, Stamford Symphony, Bard Festival Orchestra, and the Broadway hit musical Beauty and the Beast. Lang also performs regularly with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra and the Metropolitan Opera and is a member of the Boehme Wind Quintet. He performed with the American Symphony Orchestra during the premier of a Richard Wilson work and with Kurt Masur, Mung Whun Chung, and Zubin Mehta with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra.

The second concert in the series will be on Friday, February 11, at Bard College and Saturday, February 12, at Vassar College. Works to be performed -continued- include a world premier by Richard Wilson; Mozart's Concerto No. 20 in D Minor, K. 466 with featured piano soloist Richard Wilson; and Felix Mendelssohn's Symphony No. 3 in A Minor, Op. 56, "Scottish." The third and final concert of the 1999-2000 series will be on Friday, May 5, at Bard and Saturday, May 6, at Vassar. Works to be performed are Alexander Tcherepnin's Serenade in D Major for String Orchestra, Op. 97; Louis Spohr's Concerto No. 2 in B Minor, Op. 88, featuring violinists Erica Kiesewetter and Erick Wyrick; and Beethoven's Symphony No. 2 in D Major, Op. 36.

Leon Botstein is music director of the ASCO, coartistic director and conductor of the Bard Music Festival, music director of the American Symphony Orchestra, and president of Bard College. He is editor of The Musical Quarterly and has published several books, including The Compleat Brahms and Jefferson's Children: Education and the Promise of American Culture.

Richard Wilson is ASCO composer-in-residence and holds the Mary Conover Mellon Chair in Music at Vassar College. He has composed more than seventy works in many genres, including opera. Recent commissions have come from the Chicago String Quartet and the Koussevitsky Foundation.
