WOODSTOCK CHAMBER ORCHESTRA FEATURES WORLD PREMIERE OF BENJAMIN BORETZ'S UN

Concert on Wednesday, November 10, at Bard College will also feature Music of Saint-Saëns and Rodrigo with soloist Gregory Dinger

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.-The Woodstock Chamber Orchestra (WCO) concert on Wednesday, November 10, at Bard College will feature the world premiere of UN (-) by Benjamin Boretz; Rodrigo's Fantasia para un Gentilhombre; and Saint-Saëns 's Symphony in A Major. The concert, which begins at 8:00 p.m., will be held in Olin Hall.

Benjamin Boretz says that "the sound and personality of the WCO was the conscious inspiration for UN (-)." Boretz, a professor at Bard College for twenty-five years, composed the piece for Luis Garcia-Renart, artistic director of the Woodstock Chamber Orchestra, fellow faculty member at Bard College, and a dear friend. UN (-) was conceived as a musical gift to Boretz's music-playing and music-loving neighbors, and as a contribution to a communal musical celebration according to Boretz. He says that it is suffused with a sense of his lifelong concern for finding meaningful modes of communality in artmaking-qualities that may have lived in the sounds of old Korean courts and old French churches.

Benjamin Boretz, professor emeritus of music at Bard College, encapsulates his personal history as a lifelong effort to integrate a variety of habits of articulating thoughts and ideas and to teach and disseminate them through CDs, cassettes, videos, books, and magazines. His most recent project is the Open Space series, a collaboration with Elaine Barkin, J. K. Randall, and Mary Lee Roberts. Gregory Dinger, classical guitar soloist, will be featured in Rodrigo's Fantasia para un Gentilhombre. Dinger is an instructor in the music program at Bard College and at SUNY New Paltz. He has performed as a soloist with the Hudson Valley Philharmonic and the WCO. Dinger is also the host on Sunrise Concert, a classical music program on radio station WDST. He is a member of the Interlude Duo and the Arabesque Trio and sings with the Woodstock Renaissance and Ars Choralis. Dinger is presently serving as president of the WCO.
