NEWLY RENOVATED 8,500 SQUARE-FOOT SPACE IN RED HOOK PROVIDES AN EXHIBITION AREA FOR BARD COLLEGE STUDENTS Twenty-three MFA candidates from the Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts will present paintings, photographs, sculptures, screenings of films
ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—The newly renovated UBS Building in Red Hook, New York, provides a "professional-level gallery," according to the Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts' director, Arthur Gibbons. An exhibition of paintings, photographs, and sculptures; screenings of film and video; as well as performances of music and readings from recent writings and poetry—created by the MFA students during their three years at Bard—will take place from Sunday, July 16, through Thursday, July 27. The opening reception for the exhibition will be held on Sunday, July 16, from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the new UBS exhibition space in Red Hook, N.Y. Gallery hours are 10:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 12 noon to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The reception, exhibition, and ongoing events are free and open to the public.
The exhibition space, formerly the Universal Builders Supply, is a beautifully converted industrial space at 64 South Broadway in Red Hook. After a yearlong process of renovation and rezoning as a museum space, the UBS building opened this May with an exhibition of art by Bard College undergraduates. "We see the space as a pedagogical tool that raises the bar on the student's performance," says Arthur Gibbons, "and the professional setting is appropriate to the level of work that the MFA students are putting out there."
The UBS Building provides an 8,500 square-foot year-round exhibition space designed specifically for the display of art for Bard College undergraduate and graduate students. In addition, the facility offers the Red Hook community—residents, students, and tourists—the opportunity to experience firsthand a selection of contemporary art in the center of the town.
This master's degree exhibition is the culmination of the three-year long unique, rigorous, interdisciplinary MFA program featuring painting, photography, sculpture, and video/installation work. Additionally, there are readings, screenings, and performances scheduled during the week by MFA candidates on the Bard Campus. (See attached schedule for details).
The twenty-three students have spent three intensive summers-in-residence at Bard College, where they have worked with faculty composed of leading artists in their respective fields of painting, writing, photography, sculpture, film and video, and music. During the winter months, the students continue to work on independent projects related to their field of study. The MFA program at Bard College is the only terminal-degree studio program that offers students the opportunity to receive cross-disciplinary feedback about their work, receiving a broader and deeper response from a community of artists, rather than the departmental approach that traditional MFA programs favor.
The MFA candidates are painters Nina Daly, Sam Martineau, Jennifer Riley, Wallace Whitney, and Arnold Dayton Wright; sculptors Ann Borwick, Thi Bui, Robert Manchester, Xan Palay, Trevor Stafford, and Willie Watson; cinematographers Michelle Handelman, Christina Kelly, and Judy Radul; photographers Andrea Hammer, Holly Lynton, and Marjorie Vechhio; writers Joel Felix, Carolyn Kuebler, and Ethel Rackin; performance artist George Emilio Sanchez; composer Deirdre McGrail; and choreographer Tony Thatcher.
The faculty of the Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts, with whom the MFA candidates have been studying, include composers Maryann Amacher, David Behrman, Bob Bielecki, George Lewis, Ben Rubin, and Richard Teitelbaum; filmmakers Peggy Ahwesh, Cecilia Dougherty, Les LeVeque, and Yvonne Rainer; multidisciplinary artist Carolee Schneemann; painters Polly Apfelbaum, Regina Granne, Arturo Herrera, Suzanne Joelson, Suzanne McClelland, Robin Tewes, and Stephen Westfall; photographers Josef Astor, Mark Alice Durant, Barbara Ess, Stephen Frailey, Charles Hagen, and Judy Linn; sculptors Nayland Blake, Nancy Bowen, Kenji Fujita, Arthur Gibbons, and Nancy Shaver; writers Lydia Davis, Heinz Insu Fenkl, Carla Harriman, Ann Lauterbach, Lynne Tillman, and John Yau; and critic Michael Brenson.
