WHITING AWARD-WINNER, WILLIAM T. VOLLMAN, WILL READ FROM HIS RECENT WORKS AT BARD COLLEGE

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—Author William T. Vollmann's works "tower over the work of his contemporaries by virtue of their enormous range, huge ambition, stylistic daring, wide learning, audacious innovation, and sardonic wit," according to the Washington Post. Vollmann will read from his recent work on Monday, October 2, as part of Bradford Morrow's "Innovative Contemporary Fiction" course reading series at Bard College. The reading, free and open to the public, will be held in Room 102 of the F. W. Olin Humanities Building at 2:30 p.m.

William T. Vollmann was born in Los Angeles in 1959. He attended Deep Springs College in California and Cornell University, where he graduated summa cum laude in comparative literature. In 1988 Vollmann received a Whiting Foundation Award, and last year the New Yorker cited him as one of the twenty best American writers under forty. His journalism has appeared in publications such as Esquire, Spin, Outside, The Los Angeles Times Magazine, and The New Yorker. He is the author of eleven books, including his most recent novel, The Royal Family, as well as You Bright and Risen Angels, The Ice-Shirt, Whores for Gloria, Fathers and Crows, Butterfly Stories, and The Rifles; the story collections The Rainbow Stories, Thirteen Stories and Thirteen Epitaphs, and The Atlas, the winner of the PEN Center USA West Award for Best Fiction; and the non-fiction book An Afghanistan Picture Show. Vollmann founded the Co-Tangent Press in order to publish his own limited-edition art books. His next novel, Argall, volume three in his acclaimed "Seven Dreams" series of novels about the collisions between European colonizers and Native Americans, will be published by Viking next August. Vollmann lives in California.
