PHOTOGRAPHS BY ALUMNUS SETH RUBIN WILL BE EXHIBITED AT WOODS STUDIO, BARD COLLEGE His exhibition, A night landscape, will be on view at Woods Studio gallery from Thursday, October 19, through Saturday, November 18

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, NY—The exhibition A night landscape, comprising photographs by Bard alumnus Seth Rubin ‘90, will be on view at the Woods Gallery in Woods Studio on the Bard College campus from Thursday, October 19, through Saturday, November 18. An opening reception for the exhibition will be held on October 19, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. The gallery is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.; both the exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.

Rubin’s recent photographs are black-and-white images made in his studio in upstate New York. He creates scenes and portraits and then photographs his creations. \"Seth Rubin speaks of his works as performances for the camera, and his titles, such as I threw ash on the snow and then lay down in a walking position (1994) underscore the importance of the process to the artist,\" write Donna Harkavy and Margaret Mathews-Berenson in Head to Toe, Impressing the Body, their recent catalogue of an exhibition at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. \"[He] records the impression of his body both fragmented and whole, left in various materials. His sensuous and ghostly photographs speak of the spiritual and the corporeal, birth and death, presence and absence.\" Rubin’s latest work uses a cameraless process to create extraordinarily detailed images of plants and objects.

After graduating in 1990 from Bard College, where he majored in photography, Rubin received an M.F.A. degree from the Yale School of Art. He began exhibiting his work at the age of fifteen. His work has been shown in galleries in New York, Paris, and London. His most recent exhibitions have been at the Photographic Center at Boston University, University Gallery of the University of Massachusetts, and Yancy Richardson Gallery in New York City. Rubin is artist-in-residence of the Merchant Ivory Foundation and teaches photography at Columbia-Greene Community College in Hudson, New York. He has contributed illustrations to several notable publications, including The Films of Merchant Ivory by Robert Emmet Long.
