WORKS BY RICHARD STRAUSS AND BRAHMS TO BE PERFORMED BY THE WOODSTOCK CHAMBER ORCHESTRA ON WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 8, AT BARD COLLEGE

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—On Wednesday, November 8, the Woodstock Chamber Orchestra will perform works by Richard Strauss and Johannes Brahms at Bard College. The concert, presented by The Bard Center, will begin at 8:00 p.m. in Olin Hall. Tickets are $12 for adults; $6 for students; and free for children under twelve and Bard College faculty, staff, and students with identification.

The chamber orchestra will perform Strauss\'s Serenade for Winds, Op. 7, and Concerto for Horn in E-flat Major, Op. 11, with horn soloist Andrew Karr; and Brahms’s Serenade in D Major, Op. 11.

Soloist Andrew Karr is an adjunct faculty member at the Poughkeepsie Day School. At age nine, he began studying French horn and piano at the Preparatory School of the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. Karr graduated from the Curtis Institute of Music. In 1997 he was a finalist in the Philadelphia Orchestra’s concerto competition and in 1999 was the winner of the New World Symphony’s concerto competition, which led to a solo performance with that orchestra in Miami Beach.

Karr has served as principal horn of the Haddonfield Symphony, New World Symphony, and Jeunesses Musicales World Orchestra. He has appeared with the Berlin Philharmonie, the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, and the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires. In recent years, Karr has also studied conducting with Michael Tilson Thomas, music director of the San Francisco Symphony and in 1999 he was conducting fellow and assistant to Thomas at the Pacific Music Festival in Sapporo, Japan. Karr resides in Poughkeepsie.

The Woodstock Chamber Orchestra is celebrating its twenty-second season and is under the direction of Luis Garcia-Renart, professor of music at Bard College. WCO concerts feature classical music from the baroque to the modern era. Additional performances of this program will be given at Holy Cross Church in Kingston on Saturday, November 4, at 8:00 p.m., and at St. John\'s Roman Catholic Church in West Hurley on Sunday, November 5, at 3:00 p.m.
