FIVE BARD ALUMNI/AE POETS WILL READ AS PART OF THE JOHN ASHBERY POETRY SERIES ON FRIDAY, OCTOBER 27

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, NY—The John Ashbery Poetry Series will feature a gala reading by five Bard graduates prominent in the poetic avant-garde on Friday, October 27. The reading, presented by the Bard Center, will begin at 4 p.m. in Room 102 of the F. W. Olin Humanities Building and is free and open to the public.

The poets, Lynn Behrendt, Drew Gardner, Mitch Highfill, Kimberly Lyons, and Elizabeth Robinson, all graduated from Bard in the late 1980s or early 1990s. Robert Kelly, Asher B. Edelman Professor of English, noting this is the first time all the poets have read together, calls the group \"important members of the current poetry scene.\"

Lynn Behrendt, class of ‘81, is the author of two chapbooks: The Moon as Chance and Characters. Her third book, Tinder, is soon to be published by Situations. She is the editor of a poetry chapbook series called LINES, which published work by Kimberly Lyons, Mary Egan, H. R. Stoneback, and others. Behrendt currently resides in Red Hook with her three-year-old son.

Drew Gardner, class of ‘91, has published poems in The Gertrude Stein Awards, Innovative American Poetry, and in Primary Trouble: An Anthology of American Poetry. Active as a jazz musician as well as a poet, he lives in New York.

Mitch Highfill is the former editor of Red Weather magazine and the Poetry Project Newsletter. His first book of poems is Liquid Affairs (United Artists Books).

Kimberly Lyons, class of ‘81, has published half a dozen poetry chapbooks and Abacadabra (Granary Books). She was the director of the poetry project at St. Marks in New York.

Elizabeth Robinson, class of ’85, is the author of In the Sequence of Falling Things (Paradigm Press) and two recent chapbooks, As Betokening (Quarry Press) and Lodger (Arcturus Editions). Kelsey Street Press recently published two of her books, The Seed of Bread and House Made of Silver. She has received two Gertrude Stein Awards for innovative writing and a fellowship from the MacDowell Colony of the Arts. She lives in California.
