BARD IN CHINA WILL PRESENT A TALK ON MONDAY, MARCH 12, BY LU HONGYAN, FOUNDER OF THE FIRST STUDENT ENVIRONMENTAL ORGANIZATION IN WESTERN CHINA
ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, NY—Bard in China and the student-run Earth Coalition at Bard College will present a talk by Lu Hongyan on the topic \"Student Organizing for Environmental Protection in China: Experiences and Expectations.\" The talk, which is free and open to the public, will be held on Monday, March 12 at 7:30 p.m., in Room 205 of the Olin Humanities Building at Bard College.
Lu will speak about founding the first student environmental organization in western China, and her current efforts to form an umbrella group to disseminate information and enhance coordination of other student environmental organizations in China. Lu has been invited to the United States to participate in a workshop on \"Promoting Sustainable Development in East Asia,\" held at the University of Maryland.
Lu Hongyan (Redbird) founded the Environmental Volunteer Association of Sichuan University (EVA) in 1995. This group aims to enhance environmental awareness and engender responsible action within the Sichuan University community. Lu was chairman of EVA from 1995–1997 and has served as a consultant since then. In recent years, she has worked to link student environmental groups throughout China and seeks to establish a new umbrella organization that would help these groups exchange information. As a lecturer in the School of Environmental Science and Engineering, she has developed a new course, \"The Environment and Sustainable Development,\" which is required for three-quarters of the student body.
The next lecture in the series will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 19, in Room 115 of the Olin Language Center. Lü Zhi, associate professor of biology at Peking University, visiting scholar at the Harvard University Center for Population and Development Studies, and Species and Protected Program Manager of World Wildlife Fund (WWF) China; and Daniel Viederman, vice-president of research at Citizen\'s Advisers and former chief executive officer of the China Program of the WWF, will speak about conservation in China.
