JOHN ASHBERY POETRY SERIES CONTINUES AT BARD COLLEGE WITH READINGS BY ANN LAUTERBACH AND BOB PERELMAN ON FRIDAY, MARCH 23
ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, NY-Ann Lauterbach and Bob Perelman will read from their recent poetry on Friday, March 23, at 3:30 p.m., in Room 102 of the F. W. Olin Humanities Building at Bard College. The reading, part of the John Ashbery Poetry Series, which is presented by The Bard Center, is free and open to the public.
Ann Lauterbach is the Ruth and David E. Schwab II Professor in Languages and Literature at Bard College and is also on the faculty of the Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts, where she directs the writing program. In addition to her forthcoming volume of selected poems, If in Time (April 2001), her collections of poetry include On a Stair; And For Example; Clamor; Before Recollection; and Many Times, But Then. She has contributed poems and essays to numerous journals, including Conjunctions, where she has served as contributing editor since 1981. Lauterbach has written on art and poetics in relation to contemporary culture, most recently in a series of columns for the American Poetry Review entitled "The Night Sky," as well as recent essays on sculptor David Smith's writings and drawings, and a collaborative work for sculptor Ann Hamilton's Whitecloth catalogue for the Aldrich Museum in Connecticut. Lauterbach has also taught at Brooklyn College, Columbia University, Princeton University, Denver University, City College of New York, and Graduate Center of the City of New York. She is the recipient of grants from the New York State Foundation for the Arts, Ingram Merrill Foundation, Guggenheim Foundation, and a MacArthur Fellowship.
Bob Perelman is a professor and associate chair of the Department of English at the University of Pennsylvania. He has published over 11 volumes of poetry, most recently The Future of Memory and Ten to One: Selected Poems. Perelman has also written two critical studies, The Marginalization of Poetry: Language Writing and Literary History and The Trouble with Genius: Reading Pound, Joyce, Stein, and Zukofsky, and edited Writing/Talks, a collection of talks by poets. John Ashbery has noted, "Most poets define poetry by creating it. Bob Perelman creates it by defining it, and is thus one step ahead of all the poets under the sun, one step closer to colliding with Zeno's vanishing point, to merging coyote with road runner, to winning the hand."
Additional readings in the John Ashbery Poetry Series will be held on Friday, April 20, with Claudia Keelan and Christopher Edgar, and on Friday, April 27, with Robert Kelly, Asher B. Edelman Professor of English at Bard College, and Mei-mei Berssenbrugge. Both readings begin at 3:30 p.m. in Room 102 of the F. W. Olin Humanities Building.
