ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.-In honor of National Estuary Day 2001, the Hudson River National Estuarine Research Reserve and Bard College are cosponsoring performances of Arm-of-the-Sea Theater's production Estuary Tales: A Hudson River Pageant. Two performances will be given, one at Bard on Friday, September 28, at 7:30 p.m. on the Bertelsmann Campus Center lawn (or in case of rain in the multipurpose room of the Campus Center); and one at Tivoli Memorial Park on Saturday, September 29, at 2:00 p.m. Both performances are free and open to the public. Attendees should bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating.
Estuary Tales: A Hudson River Pageant
will be a large-scale outdoor event featuring oversized puppets, vibrant masks, brilliant colors, and live music guaranteed to captivate young and old alike. The production is inspired by the river and coordinated and directed by Arm-of-the-Sea Theater, a performance ensemble that has been based in the Hudson River valley for 18 years and explores contemporary themes through the ancient traditions of mask and puppet theater, working to create visual poetry.Volunteers from the local community are encouraged to perform in the production. No previous experience is required. An organizational meeting will be held on Monday, September 24, at 7:30 p.m. in the Bertelsmann Campus Center at Bard. National Estuary Day is held each year on the last Saturday in September. The goal is to foster a sense of stewardship and appreciation for our nation's estuaries (places where fresh waters mix and meet with ocean waters to create enormously fertile habitats). Much of this diversity is found in shallow tidal wetlands, such as Tivoli Bays on the Hudson River. Both performance locations-the Bard College campus and the Village of Tivoli- are situated near Tivoli Bays, which is part of the Hudson River National Estuarine Research Reserve and managed by New York State's Department of Environmental Conservation.
