WINTER GALA MUSIC CONCERT FEATURES THE JAZZ COMBO AND THE ELECTROACOUSTIC, JAZZ, AND PERCUSSION ENSEMBLES ON SUNDAY, DECEMBER 2, AT BARD COLLEGE
ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.?The Music Program at Bard College presents the winter gala music concert on Sunday, December 2, at 8:00 p.m. The program, free and open to the public, will be held in Olin Hall and features performances by the jazz combo and the electroacoustic, jazz, and percussion ensembles.
The electroacoustic ensemble, under the direction of Richard Teitelbaum, a professor of music at Bard, will perform an excerpt from Treatise by the late English composer Cornelius Cardew, who composed this work in 1967. These were the early days of live, electronic improvisation, pioneered by such groups as Musical Elettronica Viva (MEV) in Rome (of which Teitelbaum was a founding member), and AMM in London (to which Cardew belonged). Cardew was the leading composer of the English avant-garde in the 1960s and '70s; he founded the legendary Scratch Orchestra in London, a large, free-floating group of composers, performers, and musical enthusiasts.
The electroacoustic ensemble, consisting entirely of Bard students, includes Vance Stevenson and Shawn O'Sullivan performing on laptop computers; Ben Gersham on electric guitar; Jason Jones on contact microphone; Patrick Doyle on violin; Zoltan Feher on piano; and Matt Mottel and Will Slack on synthesizers.
The jazz ensemble, under the direction of associate professor of music Thurman Barker, will perform a wide range of compositions from swing (Duke Ellington's "Harlem Airshaft"), to pop (the music of Joe Zawinul), to bop (the music of Thelonious Monk and Horace Silver).
Students include Samantha Boshnack, Edward van Gundy, and Gregory Smith on trumpets; Emily Grumbling, Max Lefer, and Sara Porter on alto saxes; Bill Ylitalo on baritone sax; David Lang on tenor sax; Joe Bacci and Michael Morini on trombone; Matt Hopkins on guitar; Colin Harte on piano; Christine Neuman and Kyle Jasper on basses; Tucker Dalton on drums; and vocalist Farihah Zaman. Special guests J. D. Parren on tenor sax and clarinet and Joe Bacci on trombone will join the ensemble.
The jazz combo, directed by Erica Lindsay, a visiting assistant faculty member of the music program, will perform Clifford Brown's "Daahoud." The combo includes Max Lefer and David Lang on tenor saxes; Samantha Boshnack on trumpet; Bill Ylitalo on baritone sax; Kyle Jasper on bass; and Tucker Dalton on drums.
Rounding out the evening will be a performance by the percussion ensemble, also under the direction of Barker. The ensemble will perform two works by Chris Crokarell, "Jamster" and "Samba Dude." Barker says the group's goals are to tackle 21st-century percussion music and provide a better understanding of music from other cultures. "Percussion music is the core, the basis of music in each culture around the world," says Barker. The ensemble includes six Bard students: Daniel Brunnemer, Tucker Dalton, Will Fenton, Jehan Moddie, Joshua Solomon, and Adam Langley.
