ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.--Bard College's widely respected and influential literary journal, Conjunctions, is celebrating its 20th anniversary this fall with a remarkable collection of new work by an exceptional array of established and emerging writers from around the world. With fiction and poetry from dozens of the world's leading contemporary poets and authors, including, among many others, Robert Creeley, Mary Caponegro, and Walter Abish, Conjunctions: 37, Twentieth Anniversary Issue promises to be a capstone in the continuing efforts of this extraordinary project.
Conjunctions
launched its first issue, a tribute to James Laughlin, in December 1981. Over the past two decades, it has distinguished itself by publishing innovative poetry, fiction, drama, translations, interviews, essays, memoirs, ethnography, musicology, art, reviews, and literary works that defy all genre categorization. While referring to Conjunctions as "a living notebook of contemporary literature," founding editor Bradford Morrow says he has always resisted efforts to define the scope or mission of the journal."Through well over ten thousand pages of work ours has been the site of many visions--some coincident, some wildly dissimilar, but always funded by a serious devotion to idea and form in language," writes Morrow. "The voices of the contributors define what Conjunctions intends, or means, at any given moment. Which is not to say the project isn't guided by a partiality in favor of writing whose language is spirited, edgy, stylistically vigorous, sometimes truly delicate, yet always out toward the brink of what is possible."

37, Twentieth Anniversary Issue, edited by Morrow, features more than 400 pages of new writings, including works from Richard Powers, Paul West, Joyce Carol Oates, John Ashbery, Walter Abish, Gilbert Sorrentino, William H. Gass, Alexander Theroux, Rick Moody, Mary Caponegro, Nomi Eve, Joanna Scott, Ann Lauterbach, Robert Creeley, Martine Bellen, Elaine Equi, and Mei-mei Berssenbrugge.According to renowned author William H. Gass, Conjunctions has maintained an unmatched standard of quality. "The quality is there, spread over the pages of every issue, for anyone to read: youthful voices and hoarse ones like mine, literally conveyed from the lands of the unlikely, manuscripts rescued from some purgatorial past, real writers recognized and fished out of the stream of pretenders who pass," writes Gass, giving Morrow high praise for his efforts in sustaining Conjunctions.
