VIVA VERDI AT BARD PRESENTS "VERDI AND THE ITALIAN SALON TRADITION," A CONCERT BY THE RISORGIMENTO PROJECT, ON MARCH 6 Program features works by Verdi, as well as Campana, Forini, Luzzi, Mercadante, Rossini, and Salvi
ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.-The Viva Verdi series at Bard College presents a concert, "Verdi and the Italian Salon Tradition," by the Risorgimento Project-a chamber ensemble dedicated to reviving salon music and culture-on Wednesday, March 6. This program begins at 8:00 p.m. in Bard Hall and is free and open to the public.
The program includes Fabio Campana's Il trovatore and L'ultima preghiera, Girolamo Forini's La caduta di Venezia, Luigi Luzzi's La derelitta, Saverio Mercadante's L'asilo al pellegrino, Gioacchino Rossini's duet Egle ed Irene, Matteo Salvi's duet L'invito, and Giusseppe Verdi's Stornello; Fiorellin; Il poveretto; Pietà, Signor; and Sei Romanze of 1845.
The Risorgimento Project performers include mezzo-soprano Julia Grella and pianist Francesco Izzo, founders and codirectors of the project, as well as soprano Danielle Woerner and tenor Osvaldo Peroni.
With a focus on music by Italian composers, the Risorgimento Project has performed to acclaim at the American Institute for Verdi Studies, Columbia University, the Dante Society of Massachusetts in Boston, Music at the Redwood in Newport, and the Società Dante Alighieri in Rome. Their repertoire includes chamber and salon pieces by Donizetti and Rossini; the once well-known Luzzi, Campana, and Carafa; as well as unpublished works by Verdi. The Risorgimento Project is a sponsored project of the New York Foundation for the Arts.
The next program in the Viva Verdi series will take place on Thursday, April 18. James Bagwell, assistant professor of music at Bard, will discuss Verdi's Requiem in Room 104 of the Olin Humanities Building at 7:30 p.m. On Tuesday, May 7, the Bard Vocal Ensemble (directed by Bagwell) will perform works by Verdi in Olin Hall at 8:00 p.m.
The Viva Verdi series is a two-year program that celebrates Giuseppe Verdi's centenary and the 140th anniversary of the founding of the Italian state. The program is presented by the Italian Studies Program at Bard.
