BARD IN CHINA PRESENTS A TALK BY ECONOMIST AND POLITICAL SCIENTIST ZHIYUAN CUI ON WEDNESDAY, MARCH 27

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - Bard in China will present a talk, "China: Civilization, or Nation-State, or Nationless State," by Zhiyuan Cui on Wednesday, March 27. The program, free and open to the public, will begin at 4:00 p.m. in Room 115 of the Olin Language Center at Bard College.

Born in China, Zhiyuan Cui is a visiting fellow at the East Asia Institute of the University of Singapore, whose special interest is in the comparative politics of China and East Asia, as well as political economy and political philosophy in general. He was an assistant professor of political science at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, an adjunct professor of economics at the Chinese People's University in Beijing, and a visiting fellow at Stanford University's Asia/Pacific Research Center. He received a B.S. from the National University of Defense Technology, and an M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. Last year he was a speaker at the program "Democracy Unrealized," held during the European-wide art exhibition, Documenta 11.

In addition to his many Chinese language publications, Cui's English publications include Sustainable Democracy (coauthor with Adam Przeworski, et al, and published by Cambridge University Press, 1994), Politics: Theory against Fate (editor, Verso, 1997). His book Wrestling with the Invisible Hand is forthcoming from Harvard University Press. Cui has also contributed chapters to several books on transformation in former socialist countries in Eastern Europe, as well as articles in journals including Journal of International Affairs, Politics and Society, Modern China, and Social Text.

Cui was a participant in East-South System Transformations, a project under the direction of Adam Przeworski with support from the MacArthur Foundation. He was also a codirector of Political Reform in Xinmi County People's Congress, a project supported by the Ford Foundation; and a participant in Democratic State Building in Contemporary China, a project supported by the Ximalaya Foundation.

Bard in China is a program that has been established to enhance learning from and about China through events and exchanges. For further information, call the Bard in China Office at 845-758-7388 or e-mail [email protected].
