THE HUDSON VALLEY LANGUAGE FORUM PRESENTS THE THIRD ANNUAL CONFERENCE ON LANGUAGE AND TEACHING AT BARD COLLEGE ON MAY 3 Conference topic is "Language Pedagogy and Culture: Teaching Languages Beyond the Textbook"
ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.--The Hudson Valley Language Forum will present the third annual conference on language teaching and culture at Bard College on Friday, May 3. The one-day conference, "Teaching Languages Beyond the Textbook," will be held from 9:15 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in Room 115 of the Olin Language Center. It is free and open to the public.
Michèle Dominy, professor of anthropology at Bard and dean of the College, will present opening remarks, followed by the first roundtable discussion, "Media and Representations of Post-Coloniality in the Hispanic World," with Kevin Gaugler of Marist College and Eva Woods and Daniel Chavez of Vassar College. The second roundtable discussion, "Teaching Foreign Languages?Challenges and Misconceptions," will include Elisa Dávila, Marinella Garatti, and David Labiosa, all of the State University of New York at New Paltz. The third roundtable discussion, "Language Teaching Out of Textbooks," will include Stephanie Kufner, Li-hua Ying, and Melanie Nicholson of Bard College. The final roundtable discussion, "Food, Culture, and Languages," will include Nilsa Rodriguez-Jaca, Anna Kossmann, and Krishendendu Ray of the Culinary Institute of America and Maxwell Schnurer of Marist College. The conference will conclude with a roundtable discussion and the inauguration of the Hudson Valley Language Forum, a joint program of Bard, Vassar, and Marist Colleges, the Culinary Institute of America, and SUNY New Paltz.
