TWENTY-SEVEN MFA CANDIDATES FROM THE MILTON AVERY GRADUATE SCHOOL OF THE ARTS, BARD COLLEGE, WILL PRESENT RECENT WORKS FROM JULY 14 TO 25 Exhibition includes paintings, photographs, and sculpture, and a film screening at the Bard College Exhibition Center
ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.-An exhibition of paintings, photographs, and sculptures, along with screenings of film and video, performances of music, and readings from recent prose and poetry-all created by MFA candidates during their three years at Bard College-will take place from Sunday, July 14, through Thursday, July 25. The opening reception for the exhibition will be on Sunday, July 14, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m., at the Bard College Exhibition Center in Red Hook, N.Y. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m.. The reception, exhibition, and ongoing events are free and open to the public. Additional readings and film screenings will be held on campus.
The 27 students have spent three intensive summers-in-residence at Bard, where they have worked with faculty composed of leading artists in their respective fields of painting, writing, photography, sculpture, film and video, and music. During the winter months, the students continued to work on independent projects related to their field of study. The MFA program at Bard College is the only terminal-degree studio program that offers students the opportunity to receive cross-disciplinary feedback about their work, receiving a broader and deeper response from a community of artists, rather than the departmental approach that traditional MFA programs favor.
The MFA candidates are painters Tom Brouillette, Heidi Dieterich, Rachel Elliott, Joel Griffith, Kathryn McAuliffe, and Erin O'Brien; sculptors Marc Holland, Kelly Kaczynski, Alisdair MacRae, Sunsook Roh, and Julianne Swartz; film and video artists Paul Chan, Ben Coonley, Melissa Parson, Aimee Papazian, Samuael Topiary, and Vinay Chowdhry; photographers Isaac Diggs, Elise Gardella, April Gertler, Orit Raff, and Viki Rutsch; writers Luisa Giugliano, Jennifer Hayashida, Ryan Kulefsky, and Jamie Schwartz; and composer Jessica Piper.
In addition to the exhibition at the Bard College Exhibition Center, there will be presentations of film and video and readings of prose and poetry by the MFA. candidates in the Bertelsmann Campus Center on the Bard campus. These programs will begin at 7:00 p.m. on July 15, July 16, July 18, and July 23; and at 5:00 p.m. on July 19.
The faculty of the Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts, with whom the MFA candidates have been studying, includes composers Maryann Amache, David Behrman, Bob Bielecki, Margaret De Wys, Brenda Hutchinson, George Lewis, Pauline Oliveros, and Richard Teitelbaum; filmmakers Peggy Ahwesh, Cecilia Dougherty, Arthur Jaffa, Les LeVeque, Joseph Santarromana, and Yvonne Rainer; multidisciplinary artist Linda Montano; painters Regina Granne, Suzanne Joelson, Blake Rayne, Rochelle Feinstein, Amy Sillman, and Stephen Westfall; photographers Josef Astor, Marco Breuer, Mark Alice Durant, Barbara Ess, Charles Hagen, Judy Linn, Penelope Umbrico, and Oliver Warsow; sculptors Nayland Blake, Nancy Bowen, Kenji Fujita, Arthur Gibbons, Rachel Harrison, Michael Joo, and Nancy Shaver; and writers Michael Brenson, Jeffrey DeShell, Ann Lauterbach, Eileen Myles, Leslie Scalapino, David Levi Strauss, Matthew Scharp, and John Yau.
The Bard College Exhibition Center provides a "professional-level gallery," according to Arthur Gibbons, director of the Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts. The exhibition space, formerly the Universal Builders Supply, is a beautifully converted industrial space at 7401 South Broadway in Red Hook.
