ARM-OF-THE-SEA THEATER WILL PERFORM AT BARD COLLEGE IN CELEBRATION OF NATIONAL ESTUARIES DAY ON SEPTEMBER 21
ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.-In honor of National Estuaries Day 2002 and the 30th anniversary of the Clean Water Act, Bard College and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation's Hudson River National Estuarine Research Reserve will present a performance of Arm-of-the-Sea Theater's At the Turning of the Tide. The program will begin at 8:00 p.m., on Saturday, September 21, in the multipurpose room of the Bertelsmann Campus Center at Bard College. Though free and open to the public, donations will be accepted.
Arm-of-the-Sea Theater's production, At the Turning of the Tide, celebrates the Hudson-the quintessential American river and the birthplace of the modern environmental movement. The program will feature a rich array of visual effects, including dozens of mask and puppet figures, and live music. Arm-of-the-Sea Theater, a performance ensemble that has been based in the Hudson River valley for 19 years, explores contemporary themes through the ancient traditions of mask and puppet theater.
This is one of 25 events being offered, as part of the Hudson River Valley Ramble, by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation's Hudson River Estuary Program. The performance will highlight the portion of the Hudson River that is an estuary-an arm of the sea where the ocean's salt water meets the fresh water running off the land. The estuary creates a rich and vital ecosystem.
National Estuaries Day (September 30) was established with the goal of fostering a sense of stewardship and appreciation for our nation's estuaries. The Bard College campus is situated on Tivoli Bays, a large, freshwater, tidal wetland that is part of the Hudson River National Estuarine Research Reserve and is managed by New York State's Department of Environmental Conservation.
The Third Annual Hudson River Valley Ramble is a two-day festival of 122 guided land and water explorations throughout the Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area, which extends from Westchester and Rockland Counties to the Capital Region. The Ramble is managed by New York State's Hudson River Valley Greenway. This year's events are intended to showcase the natural, historic, and cultural resources of the Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area.
