FORUM ON THE HISTORY OF AMERICAN WAR WILL BE HELD AT BARD COLLEGE ON FEBRUARY 11
ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.-A forum on the history of American war will be held at Bard College on Tuesday, February 11. Free and open to the public, the program will take place in the multipurpose room of the Bertelsmann Campus Center and will begin at 8:00 p.m.
Bard student Mike Dockhorn organized this forum in order to pose the question, "Why do we as a nation go to war?" The forum will cover a brief history of U.S. military operations during World War II, the Korean and Vietnam wars, and Desert Storm, with speakers Mark Lytle, James Chace, Robert Brigham, and Don M. Snider. Each of these participants will address the specifics of what brought America into the war, what happened during the conflict, and how it was resolved. Following the presentations there will be a roundtable discussion about the current situation and why we may be going to war. Bard students Eben Kaplan and Betsaida Alcantara will participate in the program.
About the Speakers:
- Mark Lytle, professor of history at Bard, will discuss World War II. He is the author of The Origins of the Iranian-American Alliance, 1940-1954, a book about WWII and the origins of the cold war.
- James Chace, the Paul W. Williams Professor of Government and Public Law and Administration and the director of the Bard Globalization and International Affairs Program, will discuss the Korean War. He is the author of Acheson: The Secretary of State Who Created the American World; The Consequences of Peace; Solvency: The Price of Survival; and America Invulnerable: The Quest for Absolute Security from 1812 to Star Wars. Chace is a frequent contributor to Foreign Affairs, New York Review of Books, New York Times Magazine, New York Times Book Review, and other publications.
- Robert Brigham, associate professor of history at Vassar College, will discuss the Vietnam War. He is the author of numerous books and essays on the subject, including Guerrilla Diplomacy and Argument Without End: In Search of Answers to the Vietnam Tragedy, written in conjunction with former Secretary of Defense Robert S. McNamara.
- Don M. Snider, professor of political science at the United States Military Academy (USMA) of West Point, will discuss Desert Storm and military policy. He is the author of Desert Storm: The Gulf War and What We Learned. Retired Colonel Snider served three combat tours as an infantryman in Vietnam. He also served in a number of defense policy-making positions, including analyst and director of political-military research at the Center for Strategic and International Studies; director of the defense policy of the National Security Council in both the Reagan and Bush administrations; and, in his last position on active duty, in the Office of the Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff.
