THE BARD CENTER PRESENTS CELLIST DAVID CALHOUN AND PIANIST SUSAN WALTERS PERFORMING WORKS BY BEETHOVEN, JANÁCEK, AND RACHMANINOFF

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.-On Wednesday, March 5, The Bard Center presents cellist David Calhoun and pianist Susan Walters performing works by Beethoven, Janácek, and Rachmaninoff. The concert, which is free and open to the public, begins at 8:00 p.m. in Olin Hall, Bard College.

Calhoun and Walters will be performing Beethoven's Sonata in A Major for Piano and Cello, Op. 69; Leos Janácek's Prohádka (Fairy Tale) for cello and piano; and Rachmaninoff's Sonata for Cello and Piano.

Cellist David Calhoun is active in chamber music, and maintains full-time residency at the Metropolitan Museum of Art with the Orion Piano Quintet. He is a member of the Kinor Quartet and the Omni Ensemble, and has been a member of the American Ballet Theater Orchestra, American Symphony Orchestra, Amor Artis Orchestra, Brooklyn Philharmonic, Mid-Atlantic Chamber Players, New York Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, and the Seacliff Chamber Players. Calhoun has toured as principal cellist for the New York City Opera and appeared as soloist with the Martha Clark Dance Company. His concert performances include appearances with the Chicago Chamber Orchestra and the Chicago Civic Orchestra, among others. A participating artist of the Bard Music Festival, Chautauqua Festival, and Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra, he is on the faculty of the Manchester Music Festival and the Horace Mann School. He received a bachelor of music degree from Northwestern University, and has studied with Yo-Yo Ma; Channing Robbins of The Juilliard School; and Frank Miller, principal cellist of the Chicago and NBC symphonies; as well as with Lynn Harrell and Janos Starker at the Ravinia Festival.

Pianist Susan Walters is a founding member of the Dakota Piano Trio and has appeared with orchestras throughout the United States. She has collaborated with such renowned artists as violinist Midori, cellists Peter Wiley and Sharon Robinson, and the Mendelssohn String Quartet. She cofounded the Golden Isles Chamber Music Festival on the Sea Islands of Georgia and has been a featured performer at the Chautauqua, Caramoor, and Mostly Mozart Music festivals. She is solo pianist with the New York City Ballet. Walters studied at the Curtis Institute of Music and the Mannes College of Music, where she won the Performance Award and a scholarship to study at L'École d'Arts Américaines in Fontainbleau, France. She says her love of chamber music was inspired by her studies with Rudolf Serkin, Nathan Milstein, and Felix Galimir.

Other upcoming music programs presented by The Bard Center include Piano Program with Commentary, on Sunday, March 16, at 3:00 p.m., featuring pianist Barbara Speer performing works by Rachmaninoff, Ravel, Stefan Wolpe, Copland/Bernstein (a Leonard Bernstein 85th anniversary tribute), and Herbert Sucoff (a 65th anniversary tribute). On Wednesday, April 26, at 8:00 p.m., the Colorado Quartet with pianist Melvin Chen will perform works by Beethoven, Robert Maggio, and Alfred Schnittke. Da Capo Celebrates Bard, on Friday, April 11, at 8:00 p.m., will feature the Da Capo Chamber Players performing works by Bard Music Program faculty and Bard alumni/ae. All concerts will be held in Olin Hall and are free and open to the public.
