"MYTHS AND REALITIES IN THE MIDDLE EAST: WHAT THE MEDIA LEAVES OUT" WILL BE THE TOPIC OF A TALK BY JOURNALIST ALISON WEIR AT BARD COLLEGE ON MARCH 4
ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.-Freelance journalist Alison Weir will give a talk entitled, "Myths and Realities in the Middle East: What the Media Leaves Out," on Tuesday, March 4. Free and open to the public, the talk will begin at 7:00 p.m. in room 115 of the Olin Language Center and is cosponsored by the Bard College Student Action Collective and the Council for the National Interest.
Weir, in her own independent investigation, spent a month traveling through the hotspots of Gaza and the West Bank. Through the presentation at Bard she will describe her experiences, show slides of the area, and discuss American press coverage of the region. Essays she wrote while traveling through the Palestinian territories have been published on the web and in the Washington Report on Middle East Affairs.
Weir has been associated with the Center for Investigative Reporting; served as an editor at Women Sports Magazine; and was a freelancer for the San Francisco Examiner and Rolling Stone. She was also the education writer for the Pacific Sun; the author of a children's book for E. P. Dutton; and the editor of Marin Scope newspaper in Sausalito, California. She has spoken on Capitol Hill, at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy; the Naval Postgraduate School/Defense Language Institute; University of California, Berkeley; Northwestern University; Stanford University; the University of Wisconsin; Florida Atlantic University, and many other venues. Weir is the founder of the organization "If Americans Knew," an organization that she says is dedicated to providing Americans with information on topics of importance that are misreported or underreported in the American media.
