BARD COLLEGE STUDENTS AND SHANGHAI THEATRE ACADEMY TO PERFORM GODS AND THE GOOD WOMAN FROM OCTOBER 4–7 IN THE RICHARD B. FISHER CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS Free Bilingual Performances Will Include a Symposium on Sunday, October 5
ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—From Saturday, October 4, through Tuesday, October 7, the Bard College Theater Department and the prestigious Shanghai Theatre Academy will host free bilingual performances of Gods and the Good Woman, a play written by William Huizhu Sun and inspired by Bertolt Brecht's The Good Woman of Sichuan. The performances take place daily at 8 p.m. (except on Sunday when performances will take place at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.) and will be held in LUMA Theater of the Richard B. Fisher Center for the Performing Arts. The performances are being presented by Bard in China and supported by the Freeman Undergraduate Asian Studies Initiative. In addition to the performances, there will be an all-day symposium on Sunday, October 5, involving scholars and artists from Bard, some neighboring institutions, and the Shanghai Theatre Academy. At 11 a.m., there will be a panel discussion focusing on Brecht in the Chinese tradition. The second panel, "Currents in Intercultural Theater," at
4 p.m., will focus on intercultural theater and the process of the creation of the production. Immediately following the 7 p.m. performance, there will be a keynote speech by Shanghai Theatre Academy President Rong Guangrun, who will talk about currents in contemporary Chinese theater and the country's theater education system, with a focus on the operation of the Shanghai Theatre Academy. All panels will take place in the Fisher Center and will be free and open to the public.
William Huizhu Sun is a faculty member in the Dramatic Literature Department at the Shanghai Theatre Academy. Founded in 1945, the Academy is one of the most distinguished theater educational institutions in China. It has trained and nurtured more than five thousand students and contributed significantly to the arts and cultural development in China.
