ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—The Continuing Studies Program at Bard College will offer four Intergenerational Seminars during the month of November. These seminars provide a chance for Hudson Valley residents and Bard undergraduates to study together, which can generate a powerful exchange of ideas and experiences to their mutual benefit. On three consecutive Tuesdays, beginning November 4 at 6:30 p.m., Justus Rosenberg, professor of Languages and Literature at Bard, will lead the seminar "The United Nations: Utopian or Viable?" The seminar will examine the principles governing the charter, rules of procedures, and the organization of the United Nations following its formation in 1945. The question of whether it is ever possible to reconcile national interests and human rights will be discussed in light of the achievements and failures of the United Nations. Rosenberg is also a visiting professor of the humanities at New School University.
On three consecutive Tuesdays, beginning November 4 at 6:00 p.m., Christopher Lindner, director of the Bard Archaeology Field School, archaeologist in residence, and visiting assistant professor of anthropology at Bard, will teach the seminar "The Hudson Vortex." This seminar will provide information and discussion about the archaeological and historical implications of development near the city of Hudson, in Columbia County, and the neighboring towns of Athens, Catskill, Claverack, and Stuyvesant, with regard to proposals for superstores, power plants, mines, and parks.
On three consecutive Wednesdays, beginning November 5 at 5:00 p.m., Jospeh Luzzi, assistant professor of Italian at Bard, will lead the seminar "The World's University: The Italian Education of Goethe, de Staël, and Wordsworth." The seminar will examine the dramatic degree to which three foreign authors—Germany's Goethe, France's Germaine de Staël, and England's William Wordsworth—journeyed to Italy to complete their aesthetic education and arrived at an historically informed understanding of the terms "poet" and "poetry."
Beginning on Friday, November 14 at 6:00 p.m., Anne Bertrand-Dewsnap, adjunct professor in art history in the CSP program at Bard, will lead the seminar "El Greco at the Metropolitan Museum of Art." Devoted to exploring El Greco's artistic production in connection with the current exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (MMA), this seminar will examine the artist's career and training, his patronage by King Philip II of Spain, and his major paintings. The second meeting of the seminar, on Saturday, November 22, at noon, will be at the MMA in New York City (participants are responsible for arranging their own transportation to the museum). The final meeting of the seminar will be on Friday, December 5, at 6:00 p.m.
