STUDENT GROUPS ORGANIZE PALESTINE AWARENESS WEEK AT BARD COLLEGE, APRIL 12–17
ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) at Bard College, in collaboration with Bard’s Human Rights Project (HRP) and Trustee Leader Scholar (TLS) Program, presents a Palestine Awareness Week on April 12–19. The program features a weeklong series of events focused on raising awareness about Palestinian life, history, and culture. All events are free and open to the public.
On Monday, April 12, at 7:00 p.m. in the Bertelsmann Campus Center’s multipurpose room, Columbia professor Joseph Massad will speak about "The Persistence of the Palestine Question." On Wednesday, April 14, at 5:00 p.m. in the Bertelsmann Campus Center’s Weis Cinema, Bard professor and author Joel Kovel will show a short film about the history of the conflict followed by a brief lecture and question-and-answer period.
An art installation, Reservations, will be on view in the multipurpose room of the Bertelsmann Campus Center from Wednesday, April 14, through Friday, April 16. The opening will be at 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday; on Thursday and Friday the exhibition will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Featuring a scale model of the wall currently under construction in the West Bank, the exhibition also includes photos and slides of the actual wall and fence; an illustrated story board; and projected video. A gray sheet will partition the room into two sides. On Thursday, April 15, at 7:00 p.m. in Robbins Lounge, two International Solidarity Movement activists will show and discuss a traveling exhibition created by and about residents of Balata refugee camp in Nablus.
On Saturday, April 17, at 5:30 p.m. in the Weis Cinema of the Bertelsmann Campus Center, the film Canticle of Stones (Michael Khalefi, 1989) will be screened. Palestine Awareness Week concludes with a cultural gala on Saturday, April 17, beginning at 10:00 p.m. in the Old Gym. Cosponsored by the TLS Understanding Arabs and Muslims (UAM) project and the SJP, the party will feature Palestinian music and films, as well as an information table about Palestinian culture.
