TAIZÉ PRAYER SERVICE AT BARD ON WEDNESDAY, APRIL 21

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—The Chaplaincy at Bard College will present a Taizé Prayer Service on Wednesday, April 21, at 7:30 p.m., in the Chapel of the Holy Innocents. Free and open to the public, it is an ecumenical candlelight service with reflective music and chants, readings, and a time of silence for quiet prayer. The Taizé Service is performed in the Chapel at the College on the third Wednesday of every month during the academic year at 7:30 p.m.

Taizé Prayer originated in Taizé, France, in an ecumenical, international community founded in 1940 by Roger Louis Schutz-Marsauche. For Sprituality Today, Patrick Burke writes: "The spirituality of Taizé is, if anything, a spirituality of celebration. Brother Roger often prays that the ‘spring of jubilation may never dry up in our hearts.’ The message from Taizé is always one of hope and festival. Once Brother Roger was asked to explain what he meant by the word festival. He replied, ‘In every person lies a zone of solitude that no human intimacy can fill, and there God encounters us. There, in that depth, is set the intimate festival of the risen Christ. So henceforth, in the hollow of our being, we discover the risen Christ: He is our festival.’"

The Rev. Ginger Grab, an Episcopal priest who is assistant chaplain at Bard and curate at the Church of St. John the Evangelist in Barrytown, originated the Taizé service at Bard. Grab received a B.A. from the University of California at Berkeley, an M.A. from Columbia University, and an M.Div. from Union Theological Seminary in New York. She also completed a year of Anglican studies at General Theological Seminary. For the past 10 years she has been the editor of The Living Pulpit, a professional journal for preachers. An associate with the Institute for Writing and Thinking at Bard, she also has developed an Evensong program for the College and the surrounding community; during the academic year, this service of candlelight and music takes place at the Chapel at 7:30 p.m. every Sunday.
