THE LIFETIME LEARNING INSTITUTE AT BARD COLLEGE FEATURES AN EXHIBITION AND AUCTION OF WORKS DONATED BY INTERNATIONALLY RENOWNED ARTISTS CHRISTO AND JEANNE-CLAUDE

From September 19 through October 4, there will be an exhibition and silent auction of signed supergraphic works at the College ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—The Lifetime Learning Institute at Bard College will present an exhibition and silent auction of signed supergraphic works donated by the artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude, from Sunday, September 19, through Monday, October 4, 2004. All events will take place in the Bertelsmann Campus Center at Bard College. An opening reception for the exhibition and auction will take place from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 19, in the multipurpose room. A series of documentaries by Maysles Films about five projects by the artists will be screened that same day in the Weis Cinema from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. The silent auction and exhibition of more than 25 signed supergraphic works (24” x 36” or larger) will continue through 10:00 a.m. on Monday, October 4, with phone bids accepted by calling the LLI office at 845-758-7314. The bids will open for each work at $250 (any bid in excess of $250 will be tax-deductible). All proceeds will benefit scholarships for Bard College students. The exhibition, on view in the Bertelsmann Campus Center’s hallway gallery and George Ball Lounge, will include signed supergraphic works of past installations and signed posters of preparatory works in progress. These include Valley Curtain, 1970–72; Running Fence, 1972–76; Surrounded Islands, 1980–83; The Pont Neuf Wrapped, Paris, 1975–85; Wrapped Reichstag, Berlin, 1971–95; Wrapped Trees, Basel, 1998; The Gates, Project for Central Park, New York City; and Over the River, Project for the Arkansas River, State of Colorado. An exhibition of preparatory drawings, maps, and graphics, titled Christo and Jeanne-Claude: The Gates, Central Park, New York, was on view at the Metropolitan Museum of Art this past spring. During 16 days in February 2005, Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s outdoor work, The Gates, Central Park, New York City, 1979–2005, will be on view in Central Park, with 7,500 saffron-colored gates placed at 12-foot intervals throughout 23 miles of pedestrian walkways from 59th Street to 110th Street and from Central Park West to Fifth Avenue. Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s work has been described as a democratic art, as the installations are free and open for all to see. The artists fund their work through the sale of their original art, as they do not accept sponsors nor government grants. The supergraphics illustrate the artists’ interest in combining art and the environment. The proceeds of the auction will benefit Bard College students creating environmental art installations. Both the exhibition and auction were made possible by a member of the Lifetime Learning Institute, Rosalie C. Rossi, who is a longtime friend of the artists. Sponsored by Bard College, the Lifetime Learning Institute provides opportunities for actively retired persons to share their love of learning in a setting that fosters the exchange of ideas and experiences. The Institute is affiliated with the Elderhostel Institute Network and offers noncredit, noncompetitive courses taught by volunteers on the Bard College campus. Classes are held during the spring and fall semesters and a January minisession. Special events include speakers programs, cultural trips, and moderated panels. In addition to study and discussion, members are encouraged to participate actively in all aspects of the operation of the Institute. Membership is open to all adults of retirement age residing in Dutchess, Ulster, and Columbia Counties of New York State.
