AMERICAN SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA TO GIVE FREE CONCERT FRIDAY, OCTOBER 8 AT THE SOSNOFF THEATER IN BARD’S ACCLAIMED RICHARD B. FISHER CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS

PROGRAM OF AMERICAN MUSIC, FEATURING WORKS BY AARON COPLAND, GEORGE PERLE, BERNARD RANDS, AND ROGER SESSIONS, WILL BE CONDUCTED BY ASO MUSIC DIRECTOR LEON BOTSTEIN AND RECORDED FOR FUTURE RELEASE ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.— Following an enormously successful season as “home orchestra” for Bard’s SummerScape Festival and the Bard Music Festival, the American Symphony Orchestra will thank its patrons in the Bard College community—and throughout the Hudson Valley—with a free concert on Friday, October 8 at 8 p.m. The concert, conducted by ASO Music Director Leon Botstein, will take place in the Sosnoff Theater in the celebrated Frank Gehry–designed Richard B. Fisher Center for the Performing Arts at Bard College. No reservations are required; seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis. The program for this free concert, which will be recorded for future release by a grant from the Goelet Foundation, features a wide-ranging survey of compelling orchestral works written between 1962 and 1995 by four American masters: BERNARD RANDS (b. 1934): …where the murmurs die… (1995) GEORGE PERLE (b. 1915): Transcendental Modulations (1993) ROGER SESSIONS (1896 – 1985): Symphony No. 8 (1968) AARON COPLAND (1900 – 1990): Inscape (1962) Information about the concert is available from the Fisher Center box office at 845-758-7900. Seating is limited, and will be offered first come, first served. The American Symphony Orchestra’s 2004–2005 Season The American Symphony Orchestra will launch its 2004–2005 Fisher Center season at Bard College on Friday and Saturday, September 17–18, with concerts featuring music by Beethoven and Wagner. On October 15, the ASO launches its 42nd season with the first of six concerts in the prestigious Lincoln Center Presents Great Performers series in New York City. All concerts will be conducted by Leon Botstein, who this year celebrates his 12th season as the ASO’s music director. Critical Acclaim for the Richard B. Fisher Center for the Performing Arts “The Richard B. Fisher Center for the Performing Arts is a dramatically soaring building with soaring ambitions and, in its 900-seat Sosnoff Theater, a soaring sound to match. During a noisy and exuberant opening weekend, this marvelous new facility for music, opera, dance and theater, at a small liberal arts college in the Hudson River Valley, has already begun making a statement that is hard to ignore.” –Los Angeles Times, April 28, 2003 “Designed by Gehry, a new arts center is a performance in itself. … It’s [a] sense of improvisation that makes this architecture so right here. Artists will feel free to experiment. Nothing about this building intimidates you or says ‘cultural institution. . . .’ With the addition of the Fisher Center at Bard . . . the Hudson River Valley is on its way to becoming one of the premier cultural destinations in the nation.” – Boston Globe, August 10, 2003 Critical Acclaim for the American Symphony Orchestra "Mr. Botstein produces qualitative concept concerts and recordings at an admirably constant rate . . . He [just] completed his 11th season as music director of the American Symphony Orchestra, a historic though often overlooked group that is enjoying a level of notoriety comparable to its days under Leopold Stokowski” – New York Sun, June 7, 2004 For information call the Fisher Center Box Office at 845-758-7900. # # #
