ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—Euripides’ drama Orestes, directed by JoAnne Akalaitis, will be performed at Bard College from Friday, October 22, through Sunday, October 24. Performances are free and open to the public in LUMA Theater of the Richard B. Fisher Center for the Performing Arts on Friday at 7:00 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday at 2:00 and 7:00 p.m. “I chose to direct Orestes, a rarely performed play, because it is a good choice for young actors as it is about young people—in this instance ones who have been taken over by violent instincts and basically become a gang,” says director JoAnne Akalaitis, Wallace Benjamin Flint and L. May Hawver Flint Professor of Drama at Bard. “We have radically changed the configuration of LUMA Theater for this student production, which has first-rate designers. Although our version is set in a fantasy realization of a wealthy suburban home, this is not a deconstructionist version, but remains mostly true to the translation.” The cast of Orestes includes Richard Saudek as Orestes; Joanne Tucker as Electra; Andrew Gilchrist as Menelaus; Eddie Bennett as Tyndareus; Rightor Doyle as Pylades; Crichton Atkinson as Helen; Emma DeCorsey as Hermione; Jase Miles-Perez and Rafael Iskhakov as Messengers; Ruy Iskandar as Phrygian Slave; Blake Young as Apollo; and Jacqi Anderson, Ruth Bistrow, Claire Jordan, Lacy Post, Zumi Rosow, Julia Tadlock, and Clara Wellons as the Chorus of Women of Argos. The scenic design is by Paul Steinberg, lighting design by Jennifer Tipton, costume design by Miranda Hoffman, and sound design and music by Bruce Odland.
