“FEMINIST ECONOMICS: A DIFFERENT APPROACH TO THE ‘DISMAL SCIENCE’” IS THE TOPIC OF A PANEL DISCUSSION AT BARD COLLEGE ON THURSDAY, OCTOBER 14 Panelists include Diane Elson, Elissa Braunstein, and Rania Antonopoulos

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—The Bard Economics Program and Omicron Delta Epsilon are sponsoring a panel discussion on the topic, “Feminist Economics: A Different Approach to the ‘Dismal Science,’” on Thursday, October 14, at Bard College. Free and open to the public, the program will begin at 5:30 p.m. in room 102 of the F. W. Olin Humanities Building. Panelists include Diane Elson, University of Essex, England; Elissa Braunstein, University of Massachusetts, Amherst; and Rania Antonopoulos, New York University and the Levy Economics Institute at Bard College. “The panel discussion brings together three of the leading scholars who focus on feminist economics,” states Taun Toay, panel organizer and Bard senior. “Elson, Braunstein, and Antonopoulos will discuss their focus within the field of economics, how they came to that focus, and the broader importance of feminist economics to the field. A significant portion of the panel will be devoted to questions from the audience, as the aim of the panel is to spark interest in and further understanding of the discipline.” Toay submitted a grant proposal to the international economics society, Omicron Delta Epsilon, during his junior year. The aim of the grant was to increase students’ and faculty’s exposure to alternative methodologies within economics. “Knowing one of the speakers led me to propose this panel to highlight a different approach to the mainstream methodology that students learn and in which many faculty members were trained in,” explains Toay.
