EMERGING POETS TAKE CENTER STAGE IN NEW ISSUE OF CONJUNCTIONS Conjunctions:43, Beyond Arcadia, Includes a Portfolio of Poetry from 12 Emerging Poets, an Unpublished Play by John Sayles, and New Work from Such Renowned Writers and Poets as Rick Moody, Gilb

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—With the world of innovative contemporary poetry flourishing, Conjunctions—the literary magazine published by Bard College—has gathered a portfolio of poems from 12 emerging poets, each handpicked by one of twelve established poets, including John Ashbery, Robert Creeley, and Ann Lauterbach. Also featured is a previously unpublished play, New Hope for the Dead, by John Sayles; a work of Russian modernism by Aleksandr Vvedensky written in the 1930s; and new work from leading contemporary writers, such as Rick Moody, Gilbert Sorrentino, Can Xue, Kelly Link, and Tova Reich. The process that brought Beyond Arcadia into being was straightforward. Curious to learn what some poets whose own work he had admired over the years were reading, Bradford Morrow, Conjunctions editor, novelist, and Bard literature professor, asked each to solicit poems by a favorite younger writer whose work they consider especially promising. The result is nearly 200 pages of poetry from new voices, some who have published a book or two and others who have not. All of the selectors, who include Martine Bellen, Sandra Cisneros, Forrest Gander, Peter Gizzy, Jorie Graham, Fanny Howe, Robert Kelly, Nathaniel Mackey, and Michael Palmer have provided an afterword about their selected poet. “Each of the twelve poets is distinct in approaching image and idea, how the word and line and page work, yet all are equal in their ambitiousness,” says Morrow. “The poems here are technically fluent, even masterful, but they are also—from poet to poet, poem to poem— -continued- spirited and spiritual, moving and witty, political and philosophical, meditative and exuberant, dark and radiant, provocative and unfailingly compelling.” The selected poets are Christian Hawkey, Frances Richard, Peter O’Leary, Graham Foust, Sarah Lang, Justin Lacour, Michelle Robinson, Eve Grubin, Joshua Corey, Tammy Gomez, Michael Ives, and Genya Turovskaya. In addition, Beyond Arcadia features new work from T. M. McNally, Gustaf Sobin, M. T. Anderson, Ben Marcus, and J. W. McCormack, a 2004 graduate of Bard College whose novel excerpt from How I Escaped My Certain Fate marks the stunning debut of a highly original new voice in contemporary literature. Conjunctions is edited by Bradford Morrow and published twice yearly by Bard College.
