BARD COLLEGE’S STUDENT-ORGANIZED NICARAGUA PROJECT SEEKS HELP FROM THE COMMUNITY Bake sale at Bard on December 3 aids program to provide houses in Chacraseca

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—The Nicaragua Project, a program of the Trustee Leader Scholar Program of Bard, the Maryknoll Nuns of New York, and the government of Chacraseca, Nicaragua, is raising funds in order to build houses in Chacraseca, an impoverished rural area on the western coast of Nicaragua. A bake sale is scheduled for Friday, December 3, at 7:00 p.m. in the Manor Café at Bard. Each year since 2002, a group of Bard volunteers has worked alongside a construction crew to build the houses, while living with local families. They have raised the funds and constructed eight houses to date. This summer six students plan to join with the project director, Bard junior Stephanie Wells, in this endeavor. They will work alongside the future homeowners to build the houses, which each cost $1400. In addition to raising money for the building supplies, the students are also coordinating clothing and school supply drives. The fundraising efforts to date have included bake sales, campus parties, and grant applications. The students continue to look for community support, however.
