MUSICIANS FROM THE BEIJING CENTRAL CONSERVATORY OF MUSIC TO PERFORM AT BARD COLLEGE WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 26 Performances Will Include Works by Chopin, Debussy, Bach, Paganini, and Others

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. — On Wednesday, January 26, musicians from the prestigious Beijing Central Conservatory of Music will perform at Bard College. The students, on a tour of music schools in the United States, will perform works on piano and violin. The concert is cosponsored by the Bard College Conservatory of Music and Bard in China, with support from the Freeman Undergraduate Asian Studies Initiative. The performance will take place at 8 p.m. in Olin Auditorium and is free and open to the public. Robert Martin, director of the Bard Conservatory, said the Beijing Conservatory concert promises to be excellent. “Melvin Chen (Bard Conservatory Associate Director) and I had the pleasure of visiting the Central Conservatory on our recent trip to Beijing, and now we’re delighted to welcome a delegation of their students and faculty to Bard and look forward to their performance,” said Martin, who is also vice president for academic affairs at Bard. The Conservatory has seven departments offering undergraduate programs of study in composition, conducting, musicology, voice and opera, piano, orchestral instruments, and traditional instruments. The Conservatory also has a six-year middle school, which gives courses in piano, orchestral instruments, traditional instruments, and music theory; two three-year primary schools; and an evening university for adults. The Music Research Institute of the Conservatory is designated to conduct interdisciplinary research with the aim of enriching the content of courses. Having served for the past 40 years both as a music education center for training professional musicians and a research/composition/performance center for developing music education, the Conservatory has grown into a large institution of high prestige capable of offering the whole range of curricula for musical training. The Bard College Conservatory of Music, which began accepting applications in 2004, is an innovative double-degree program guided by the principle that musicians should be broadly educated in the liberal arts and sciences to achieve their greatest potential. Conservatory students have the opportunity to pursue an undergraduate degree at one of the nation’s leading liberal arts colleges while training and studying with world class musicians and teachers and performing in state-of-the-art facilities, such as Bard’s new Frank Gehry-designed Richard B. Fisher Center for the Performing Arts. The Conservatory is geared toward the student who is determined to have a career in music, enhanced by the benefits of a liberal arts education; the person seeking a combined career in music and some other field; and those whose career goals lie in a field other than music, but still want to study music deeply. The Conservatory experience will be composed of five dimensions: studio instruction; ensemble and chamber music; Conservatory academic core, which includes theory, analysis, aural skills, and history; senior recital; and all-school colloquium, in which all enrolled students participate in a project focused on a specific composer.
