BARD THEATER PROGRAM PRESENTS TWO ONE-ACT PLAYS WRITTEN BY BARD STUDENTS ON MARCH 4 AND 5 Free performances of Above the Din and Monster Island at the Richard B. Fisher Center for the Performing Arts

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—The Bard Theater Program presents two one-act plays— directed by Jennie Ward and written by Bard students Devon E. Mattys and Lola Pierson—at the Richard B. Fisher Center for the Performing Arts on Friday, March 4, and Saturday, March 5. Free and open to the public, the performances begin at 7:00 p.m. in LUMA Theater. In Mattys’s Above the Din, an author searches the dark and dangerous recesses of her own imagination for a new story to write. She is slowly drawn in, beguiled, and seduced by the characters she finds there, until they betray her, strip her of her identity, and escape into the world, leaving the author trapped in a silent hell of her own imagining. The cast includes Max Cramer as Sid, Rachel Faison as Matilda, Max Forman-Mullin as Fordham, De Kole as Natalie, Markus Paminger as Willie, and Sasha Winters as Tish. Pierson’s Monster Island follows three friends as they struggle to keep their footing in a disintegrating world. Their town has literally walled itself off from whatever is left of civilization, fearing a plague that has swept the world. The town and its inhabitants are collapsing in upon themselves, crushed by the weight of their own anxieties. There is a way out, but are any of the three girls brave enough to attempt it? The cast includes Adam Goldman as Samuel, Claire Jordan as Lynn, Joanna Lee as Lucinda, Emma McGowan as Madeline, Julia Tadlock as Carrie, Joanne Tucker as Mona, and Sasha Winters as Bella. On Friday, April 8, and Saturday, April 9, two other one-act plays by Bard students will be produced, Nightmare by Yelena Elkind and Perverted Roberta by Mira Gibson. These are also free and open to the public, beginning at 7:00 p.m. LUMA Theater of the Richard B. Fisher Center. For further information and reservations, call the box office at 845-758-7900. # About the Director Jennie Ward has been directing for the past 10 years in New York, Boston, and Chicago. Past productions include Marivaux’s Changes of Heart (Le Double Inconstance); Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale; Ostrovsky’s The Storm; Chekhov’s The Seagull; Maria Irene Fornes’ Fefu and Her Friends; and a stage adaptation of Graham Greene’s novel, Travels with My Aunt. Ward was the Robert Moss Directing Resident at Playwrights Horizons for the 1999–2000 season. She is a member of the Lincoln Center Director’s Lab, and earned an MFA in directing from the Institute for Advanced Theatre Training at American Repertory Theatre/Moscow Art Theatre School/Harvard University. About the Playwrights Devon E. Mattys is a Bard senior from Richmond, Virginia. Above the Din is her second production at Bard; her first was Fireproof, part of the 2003 Ten-Minute Play Festival. Other recent productions include The Dolls and The Annals of 1908, both in Richmond. Staged readings of Mattys’s work include Look What the Widow Dragged In and Teeth, produced in association with the New Voices for the Theatre program in Virginia. Lola Pierson is a double major in human rights and theater. After her graduation this May she plans to go into plastics. # # # (2/18/05)
