THE BARD CENTER PRESENTS A CONCERT WITH VIOLINIST YOKO MATSUDA AND PIANIST REIKO HONSHO ON MARCH 20 Program includes works by Ives, Janacek, Ravel, and Schoenberg

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.--The Bard Center presents a concert with violinist Yoko Matsuda and pianist Reiko Honsho on Sunday, March 20. Free and open to the public, the program begins at 3:00 p.m. in Olin Hall at Bard College. The artists will perform Schoenberg's Phantasy, Op. 47; Janacek's Sonata for Violin and Piano; Ives's Sonata No. 4 for Violin and Piano; and Ravel's Sonate pour violon et piano. The Bard Center's spring 2005 free concert series will conclude on Wednesday, April 13, with a performance by the Da Capo Chamber Players in Olin Hall at 8:00 p.m. Da Capo will "Celebrate Bard," with a program featuring the Bard gamelan and works by Bard faculty. For further information, call 845-758-7425. # About the Artists Violinist Yoko Matsuda received her early musical training at the Toho School of Music in Japan. Since coming to the United States in 1960, she has won many awards, including first prize in the Merriweather Post Competition. She holds a bachelor of music degree from The Hartt School of the University of Hartford and a master of music degree from Yale University. Matsuda has performed on numerous occasions as a soloist with major orchestras both in the United States and Japan. As a chamber musician, she has performed with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and Music from Marlboro. An avid quartet player, she was a member of the Yale Quartet, and founder and first violinist of the Sequoia Quartet. Throughout the 1970s she served as artistic director of the Chestnut Hill Concerts in Connecticut and, in 1985, she organized the Ima Concerts, which presented chamber music series in eight communities around Los Angeles and Orange County as well as annual tours of Japan. Matsuda was head of the string program at the California Institute of the Arts and on the faculty of Pomona College. She has recorded for Vanguard, Delos, CRI, and Nonesuch records. She is currently on the faculty of Showa Music University, director of Ima Concerts in Japan, and a member of Saito Kinen Orchestra. Pianist Reiko Honsho graduated with high honors from the Toho School of Music in Japan. She continued her studies at the Hochschulen fur Musik of Vienna and Leipzig. Her teachers have included Jun Date, Josef Dichler, and J. Fischer. During her 40-year career as a member of the NHK Symphony Orchestra, Honsho performed as soloist on numerous occasions and was praised by such famous conductors as Stravinsky, Karajan, Matacic, Sawallisch, Stein, and Dutoit. She has performed with all of the major orchestras in Japan as well as with the Berlin Philharmonic and the Vienna Philharmonic during their tours of Japan. An active chamber musician, Honsho has collaborated with many ensembles in concerts and on television and radio broadcasts. She has many recordings to her credit and has received many awards for her work, which ranges in genre from the baroque to contemporary. She currently is a lecturer at the Tokyo University of Art. # # # (3/2/05)
