THE BARD CENTER PRESENTS A RECITAL BY PIANIST BARI MORT AND SOPRANO KIMBERLY KAHAN ON SUNDAY, APRIL 17 Program includes works by Canteloube, Charpentier, and Debussy

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—The Bard Center presents the final concert in its spring 2005 series on Sunday, April 17, with a free recital featuring pianist Bari Mort and soprano Kimberly Kahan. The program begins at 3:00 p.m. in Olin Hall. The program includes Gustave Charpentier’s Depuis le jour; Claude Debussy’s Ariettes oubliées and Estampes; Joseph Canteloube’s Chants d’Auvergne; Alfred Bachelet’s “Chère nuit”; and Carlisle Floyd’s “Ain’t it a Pretty Night?” Lyric soprano Kimberly Kahan is a native of Louisville, Kentucky; she now resides in New York City and the Hudson Valley. After graduating from Indiana University at Bloomington, she quickly established herself in such leading roles as Mimi in La Bohème, Countess Almavia in Le nozze di Figaro, and Micaela in Carmen, which she performed in Tel Aviv. She sang in the premier of Kyle Gann’s opera, Cinderella’s Bad Magic, in Moscow and St. Petersburg, Russia. A favorite of European audiences, Kahan has appeared in concert in such cities as Helsinki, Copenhagen, Nice, Naples, Istanbul, and Athens. Equally comfortable in oratorio, she has performed as the soprano soloist in Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony and Mass in C Major, Bach’s Mass in B Minor and Magnificat, and Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass, as well as in the Requiems of Brahms, Fauré, Mozart, and Verdi. Pianist Bari Mort, made her New York recital debut at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall as winner of the Artists International Young Musicians Auditions. Writing of that concert, New York Times critic Bernard Holland described her as a pianist who “uses her excellent musical instincts with taste and technical security.” He went on to comment on her “big, generous ideas . . . pure phrasing” and “intense virtuosity.” Mort has performed many solo recitals and chamber music concerts in the United States. She is a member of the New York Chamber Ensemble and has appeared with the International String Quartet, Musica de Camera, Phoenix Chamber Players, Da Capo Chamber Players, and the American Symphony, among others. She has performed for the Bar Harbor Music Festival, Belleayre Music Festival, Cape May Music Festival, Storm King Music Festival, Beethoven Festival, and Music at Caramoor. Her broadcast appearances include PBS television’s Live From Lincoln Center, Vision Cable Television, National Public Radio’s WNYC and WQXR in New York City and WKYV in San Francisco. Mort has toured the continental United States for Columbia Artists’ Community Concerts series. An avid performer of 20th-century music, she has recorded as soloist on a contemporary American music CD for ERM Records and as chamber musician on two releases for Albany Records. More recently she was soloist with the American Symphony Orchestra in a performance of Joan Tower’s Piano Concerto. As a scholarship and fellowship student, Mort received her master of music degree from The Juilliard School and her bachelor of fine arts degree from SUNY-Purchase. Mort is on the faculty of Bard College and resides in Croton-on-Hudson, New York.
