BARD MUSIC PROGRAM OFFERS FIVE CONCERTS IN MAY

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—The Music Program at Bard College will offer five concerts in May. For further information, call 845-758-7250 (except as noted below). On Tuesday, May 3, there will be a free performance by the Bard College Electro-Acoustic Ensemble, directed by Brenda Hutchinson, visiting associate professor of music at Bard. This program begins at 8:00 p.m. in room N211, the Blum Big Band Room in the Center for Film, Electronic Arts, and Music in the Milton and Sally Avery Arts Center. On Wednesday, May 4, the Bard College Community Chorus and Chamber Singers, directed by James Bagwell, associate professor of music at Bard, will perform Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana. Soloists for this event are Amy Justman, soprano, Scott Williamson, tenor, and Rod Gomez, baritone. The combined choruses will present the work in Orff’s own two-piano and percussion arrangement, with Bari Mort and James Fitzwilliam at the pianos. This program begins at 8:00 p.m. in the Sosnoff Theater of the Richard B. Fisher Center for the Performing Arts. Admission is $5, free for Bard students, faculty, and staff, and for children 12 and under. Reservations are recommended. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. Call the Fisher Center Box Office at 845-758-7900. On Monday, May 9, the Da Capo Chamber Players will present an evening of new compositions and orchestrations by Bard composers. The free program—coordinated by Joan Tower, Asher B. Edelman Professor in the Arts at Bard—begins at 7:30 p.m. in Bard Hall. On Tuesday, May 10, there will be a free concert by the Bard College Jazz Ensembles—the Wayne Shorter Ensemble and the Bard College Big Band—directed by Erica Lindsay, visiting assistant professor of music at Bard. The Bard Big Band, with special guest artist and composer extraordinaire Oliver Lake, will perform Lake’s music. The concert begins at 8:00 p.m. in Bard Hall. On Wednesday, May 11, the Bard College Orchestra, also under James Bagwell’s direction, will perform Beethoven’s Symphony No. 1 in C, Op. 21; Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 4 in D; Kol Nidre by Max Bruch; and “The Flower Song” from Gounod’s Faust. Student soloists include Alexandra Stefans, Max Scheinen, and Elizabeth Przybylski. This program begins at 8:00 p.m. in the Sosnoff Theater of the Richard B. Fisher Center for the Performing Arts.
