BARD COLLEGE PSYCHOLOGY PROFESSOR RICHARD GORDON RECEIVES THREE HONORS FOR HIS GROUNDBREAKING WORK IN PSYCHIATRY AND EATING DISORDERS

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—Richard Gordon, professor of psychology at Bard, is the recipient of three major honors this spring. At its annual meeting in Atlanta in May the American Psychiatric Association (APA) inducted Gordon as an honorary fellow in recognition of his significant contributions to the field of psychiatry. Dr. Michelle Riba, president of the APA, said, “Your invaluable research and teaching contributions will lead to improved treatment for the many people suffering with eating disorders, in particular bulimia and anorexia nervosa. Recognition as an honorary fellow of the APA is only a small token of the high regard we have for all your outstanding efforts.” The group also noted Gordon’s contributions to an analysis of social and cultural issues in the rise of biological psychiatry. Gordon received the Outstanding Civilian Service Medal for his consultation with the Eating Disorders Multidisciplinary Team and Cadet Health Promotion and Wellness Council at the United States Military Academy at West Point. Since 2000, he has assisted Academy personnel in developing effective treatment and prevention efforts for eating disorders among cadets. In their citation, the academy stated, “With Dr. Gordon’s vast knowledge, expert consultation, and talent in facilitating collaborative team effort, the United States Military Academy now possesses an eating disorders program that consistently exceeds the standard of care at institutions of higher learning in the United States.” In April the Academy for Eating Disorders designated Gordon as a fellow at its annual meeting in Montreal, recognizing his significant contributions in the understanding and treatment of eating disorders. The Academy is an international organization of researchers, clinical professionals, and educators dedicated to a better comprehension and care for people with eating disorders, whose numbers are in the millions worldwide. Richard A. Gordon has taught at Bard College since 1973, and is a practitioner of clinical psychology in Red Hook, New York. His books include Eating Disorders: Anatomy of a Social Epidemic (Blackwell, 2nd edition, 2000), which was translated into four languages, and is the coauthor of Eating Disorders and Cultures in Transition (Routledge, 2001). Gordon has written numerous articles in professional journals and is an editor of Eating Disorders: Journal of Treatment and Prevention. Bard College is a selective, private, coeducational liberal arts college whose undergraduate programs are enriched through its affiliations with research institutes and graduate programs. Founded in 1860, the College draws 1,300 students from all regions of the United States. Fourteen percent of Bard’s students are from abroad, creating a diverse and internationally informed environment. The College's curricular strength is bolstered by innovative scholarship programs in literature, arts, and science, including a collaboration with The Rockefeller University.
