ACCLAIMED LATIN AMERICAN AUTHOR MAYRA MONTERO TO GIVE READING AT BARD COLLEGE ON MONDAY, OCTOBER 3 Montero Will Read from Her Novel, The Captain of the Sleepers

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.— Mayra Montero, who has been called one of the most exciting writers of the Americas, will give a public reading of her novel The Captain of the Sleepers at Bard College on Monday, October 3. Montero, who is the author of a collection of short stories and seven novels, will be introduced by novelist and Bard literature professor Bradford Morrow. The reading, which is being presented as part of Morrow’s Innovative Contemporary Fiction Reading Series, is free and open to the public and takes place at 4 p.m. in Weis Cinema in the Bertelsmann Campus Center. Publishers Weekly lauded Montero as “a major writer of the contemporary, post-Boom generation in Latin America” and praised Captain of the Sleepers for its “startling imagery and hypnotizing storytelling.” She has published novels, stories, and essays in Spanish. Her novels In the Palm of Darkness, The Messenger, The Last Night I Spent with You, The Red of His Shadow, Deep Purple, and The Captain of the Sleepers are available in English, all in translations by Edith Grossman. Her latest novel, Son De Almendre, will be published in Spanish this fall and in English in fall 2006. Montero was born in Havana in 1952 and was educated at a Catholic’s nun’s school before the revolution. Her father, a well-known television writer and actor, moved the family to Puerto Rico after the revolution. Montero studied journalism in Mexico and Puerto Rico and worked as a correspondent in Central America and the Caribbean.
