NATIONAL BOOK AWARD–WINNING WRITER JOHN BARTH TO GIVE READING AT BARD COLLEGE ON TUESDAY, OCTOBER 4 Barth Will Read from The Book of Ten Nights and a Night: Eleven Stories

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.— John Barth, whom the Washington Post has called “one of the greatest novelists of our times,” will give a public reading of selections from The Book of Ten Nights and a Night: Eleven Stories at Bard College on Tuesday, October 4. Barth is the author of numerous works of fiction, including The Sot-Weed Factor, Giles Goat-Boy, The Tidewater Tales, Lost in the Funhouse, The Last Voyage of Somebody the Sailor, the National Book Award winner Chimera, and most recently The Book of Ten Nights and a Night. He will be introduced by novelist and Bard literature professor Bradford Morrow. The reading, which is being presented as part of Morrow’s innovative course on contemporary fiction, is free and open to the public and takes place at 7 p.m. in Olin Hall. The Book of Ten Nights and a Night gathers stories published throughout Barth’s long career, spanning a range of styles from straightforward narrative to experimental metafiction. The stories are framed by the narration of a veteran writer who spends 11 nights with a nubile muse in the time immediately following September 11, 2001. The two characters debate the meaning and relevance of writing and storytelling in the wake of disaster. The New York Times Book Review praised the book as “a profound exploration of the value of storytelling,” while the San Francisco Chronicle called it “a delight.” Barth taught for many years in the writing program at Johns Hopkins University and currently lives in Chestertown, Maryland.
