SYMPOSIUM SATURDAY, APRIL 8, AT BARD COLLEGE FOCUSES ON THE COMIC BOOK Undergraduate symposium topics include manga and anime, comics and comix, heroes and antiheroes, among others

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—On Saturday, April 8, Bard College hosts an undergraduate symposium on the comic book, beginning at 5:30 p.m. in room 102 of the F. W. Olin Humanities Building. This program, organized by Bard professors Mat Johnson, Benjamin Stevens, and Yuka Suzuki, is free and open to the public. Undergraduate students were invited to submit proposals for papers on any aspect of the comic book, the graphic novel, manga, and related art forms. “This symposium emphasizes the rich availability of these forms to intellectual engagement, criticism, and interpretation, while sampling among the wide range of styles and traditions into which they have proliferated (from ‘mainstream’ to ‘independent’ to ‘fan fiction’; and from pulp to glossy to graphic novel; and to both silver and small screens),” explains Stevens. Student speakers present their papers, opening their research to constructive criticism while practicing public speaking and presentation skills. The symposium also features short papers from the organizers and concludes with a film screening.
