THE BARD CENTER PRESENTS THE WORLD-RENOWNED COLORADO QUARTET IN CONCERT ON SUNDAY, APRIL 9 Free program features performance of works by Beethoven, Schubert, and Katherine Hoover’s “The Knot”

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—The award-winning Colorado Quartet, artists in residence at Bard, will appear in concert at the College’s Olin Hall on Sunday, April 9, at 3:00 p.m. The free event is open to the public and is presented by The Bard Center. The program features a performance of Katherine Hoover’s String Quartet No. 2, “The Knot,” as well as Beethoven’s String Quartet in C Minor, Op. 18, No. 4, and Schubert’s String Quartet in G Minor, D. 887, Op. Post. 161. “This string quartet is just as mysterious to me as my first one was, though it is quite different in its overall ethos,” notes composer Hoover. “The first movement is slow, with a rather quiet, compressed feeling, followed by a fast movement, whose lyrical sections are combined with a constant undercurrent of motion. The third movement is an experiment; nearly all of it is played on open strings, and its feeling is expansive. In the last, rather intense movement I have returned to material of the first two movements—it moves forward precipitously until it gets caught in a knot; then there is a fairly graphic depiction of shaking, and pulling at strings to undo the knot. Later it gets caught again, but the second knot is untied in a much different way.” The Colorado Quartet—Julie Rosenfeld and D. Lydia Redding, violins; Marka Gustavsson, viola; and Diane Chaplin, cello—have been in residence at Bard since 2000. They are “a first-class ensemble that rises with panache to meet every challenge in the music,” stated the Washington Post. Performing in major cities across the globe, the quartet’s New York appearances have included the Mostly Mozart Festival, where they performed 20 Haydn quartets over a two- year period, as well as concerts in Carnegie Hall and at Lincoln Center. The ensemble regularly performs the complete Beethoven quartets, most recently in Berlin, and they are the first female quartet to have performed the Beethoven cycle in both North America and Europe. The quartet’s recordings of Beethoven, Schubert, Mendelssohn, Brahms, and contemporary composers may be found on Parnassus, Mode, and Albany Records. Beginning with the occasion of the quartet’s 20th anniversary in 2003, the group recorded the first in a series of the complete Beethoven quartets, which it hopes to have completed by its 25th anniversary in 2008. In addition to serving on the faculty of the Music Program at Bard, the quartet’s members are also on the faculty of the Bard College Conservatory of Music.
