NEW YORK UNIVERSITY PROFESSOR TO DISCUSS TRADE AND CHINA AT BARD COLLEGE ON WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 8

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.— On Wednesday, November 8, Andrew Ross, a professor of social and cultural analysis at New York University (NYU), will give a lecture on trade and China. His talk, “Lessons from the Outsourcing Wars: Is the China Trade a Threat or an Opportunity?” is based on a year of fieldwork in Yangtze Delta cities among skilled Chinese employees of foreign firms. Ross will offer a sharp assessment of the impact of free trade on the region, and on the all-important China trade with the United States and other advanced countries. The lecture, which takes place at 7 p.m. in room 115 of the Olin Language Center on the Bard College campus, is free and open to the public and is sponsored by Bard in China and the Bard Economics Program. Ross is a professor in the American Studies program at NYU and a regular contributor to the Nation, Village Voice, and Artforum. He is also the author and editor of numerous books, including Fast Boat to China: Corporate Flight and the Consequences of Free Trade—Lessons from Shanghai; Low Pay, High Profile: The Global Push for Fair Labor; No-Collar: The Humane Workplace and Its Hidden Costs; and The Celebration Chronicles: Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Property Value in Disney’s New Town. Much of his writing focuses on labor and the workforce, from the western world of business and technology to sweatshop labor in the Third World. Making use of social and cultural analysis, Ross questions the human cost of economic growth and has an activist, antiglobalization approach.
