Bard Hosts Dance Across Borders 2007: The Body Politic, Three-Week International Dance Symposium

Student and Professional Dancers May Apply Now; Symposium Offers Exciting Opportunity to Work With Renowned Choreographers From All Over the World ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—Bard College hosts Dance Across Borders 2007: The Body Politic, a three-week dance symposium for student and professional dancers, from May 29 through June 16. An internationally renowned group of choreographers offer workshops, seminars, and performances. Student dancers, who are at least at the advanced-intermediate level, and professional dancers are invited to submit applications by February 1, in order to participate in the symposium. Workshop participants perform, with members of Noemie Lafrance’s company, in a new site-specific piece by Lafrance that is inspired by the architecture and setting of Bard’s Richard B. Fisher Center for the Performing Arts, designed by the acclaimed architect Frank Gehry. Some of the noted dancers and choreographers who will lead the seminar are, from the U.S., Pat Cremins, Jane Comfort, Molissa Fenley, Sondra Loring, Dean Moss, and Muna Tseng, as well as Bard alumni Arthur Aviles ’87, Layla Childs ’95, and Sonya Robbins ’96, and Bard professors Jean Churchill and Susan Osberg. Borders crossed by the choreography faculty are Bulgaria, Canada, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, France, India, Israel, Lebanon, Lithuania, Sweden, and Venezuela. “Dance transcends borders: geographic and psychological. Dance is a language that choreographers speak with their unique voices. We can learn to speak to each other without saying a word or we can dance with words if we chose to,” says Susan Osberg, visiting associate professor of dance at Bard and one of the organizers of Dance Across Borders. “The theme of this year’s symposium is The Body Politic, in which international choreographers and dancers pass on what they’ve learned about how to relate their work to the body, to the community, and to world events. I can think of no better venue to explore this theme than workshops led by this international group of contemporary choreographers, who are redefining the very nature of dance and performance today.” “Dance Across Borders is a cooperative structure for international exchange, based on mutual respect for the integrity of different artistic points of view.
