The Bard Center Presents Recital with Violist Marka Gustavsson and Pianist Carmel Lowenthal

THE BARD CENTER PRESENTS SUNDAY AFTERNOON RECITAL WITH VIOLIST MARKA GUSTAVSSON AND PIANIST CARMEL LOWENTHAL
April 15 Program Features Works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Johannes Brahms, Darius Milhaud, and George Tsontakis
ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—The Bard Center presents a Sunday afternoon recital on April 15, with violist Marka Gustavsson and pianist Carmel Lowenthal performing works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Johannes Brahms, Darius Milhaud, and George Tsontakis. The program is free and open to the public and begins at 3:00 p.m. in Olin Hall at Bard College.
"We are so fortunate at Bard to have an astonishingly diverse community of American composers. Not only are they award winning, disciplined in their craft, and communicative in their works, but they are wonderful people," states Gustavsson, visiting assistant professor of music and faculty member of The Bard College Conservatory of Music. "It is an honor to perform The Requiescat, a work by my Bard colleague George Tsontakis on this program." Other works include Bach's Sonata in G Major, BWV 1027; Milhaud's Quatre Visages, Op. 238; and Brahms's Sonata in E-flat Major, Op. 120, No. 2.
In her seventh season as violist of the award-winning Colorado Quartet, Marka Gustavsson has participated in the Bard, Newport, and Mostly Mozart festivals. As a member of the quartet, in addition to performing the complete Bartók, Beethoven, and Schubert quartet cycles, she has recorded the middle and late Beethoven quartets for Parnassus. Gustavsson has worked with many contemporary composers, including Martin Bresnick, John Halle, Katherine Hoover, Joan Tower, Tsontakis, and Richard Wernick. She serves on the faculties of Bard College and the Soundfest Quartet Institute.
Pianist Carmel Lowenthal has performed throughout the United States and Canada. Highlights of recent seasons include appearances as concerto soloist and chamber musician at the Skaneateles Festival and performances at Bargemusic Festival, SUNY Performing Arts Center, Avery Fisher Hall, Ukrainian Institute of America, and Metropolitan Museum of Art. She has toured extensively with the Goliard Ensemble and has collaborated with members of Orpheus, Brentano String Quartet, Greenleaf Chamber Players, Full Fathom ensemble, and Paul Taylor Dance Company. Lowenthal is on the precollege faculty of the Manhattan School of Music.
George Tsontakis is Distinguished Composer in Residence at Bard College. He is the recipient of the Charles Ives Living Award (2006) and Grawemeyer Award (2004). In addition to these, Tsontakis received the award for lifetime achievement from the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1995 and two Kennedy Center Friedheim awards, for String Quartet No. 4 (1989) and Perpetual Angelus (1992). A faculty member of Bard College since 2003 and of the Aspen Music School in Aspen, Colorado, since 1976, Tsontakis was founding director of the Aspen Contemporary Ensemble from 1991 until 1998. He studied composition with Roger Sessions at The Juilliard School and conducting with Jorge Mester. His music is recorded on the Hyperion, New World, CRI, Koch, and Opus One labels. His works have been commissioned and performed by the American, Blair, Colorado, and Emerson string quartets; New York Virtuoso Singers; Aspen Wind Quintet; Orpheus; flutist Ransom Wilson; violinist Glenn Dicterow; and many other orchestras, ensembles, and musicians. He is on the composition faculty of The Bard College Conservatory of Music.
