Cultural Studies Writer Lawrence Grossberg To Speak at Bard on Monday, April 23 Lawrence Grossberg, renowned cultural studies writer and professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, will speak at Bard College on Monday, April 23.

Cultural Studies Writer Lawrence Grossberg To Speak at Bard on Monday, April 23

“Promises or Dreams: Kids, Politics, and America’s Future” is the Topic of a Free Lecture by Internationally Renowned Scholar ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—Lawrence Grossberg will give a talk, “Promises or Dreams: Kids, Politics, and America’s Future,” at Bard College on Monday, April 23, at 5:00 p.m. in Weis Cinema at the Bertelsmann Campus Center. Free and open to the public, the event is sponsored by Bard’s American Studies, Human Rights, and Historical Studies Programs. Randy Martin, a professor in the Art and Public Policy department at Tisch School of the Arts, New York University, writes: “Investing in kids to take back the future is the eloquent and ambitious rallying cry of Lawrence Grossberg’s new book, Caught in the Crossfire: Kids, Politics and America’s Future (2005) . . . Equally at ease in the registers of social movements and public policy, this is a book that deserves to be widely read and taught . . . Part of what makes Caught in the Crossfire such a valuable resource for expanding our political space is its analytic embrace of so many spheres of social life. It deftly deploys the lateral move across disciplines that is a feature of the best of cultural studies. Yet for all of its sweep, from historical genealogy of youth to its break-down of the governing coalition of neoliberals and new conservatives, it offers a clear map through the current conceptual thicket . . .” Lawrence Grossberg is Morris Davis Distinguished Professor of Communication Studies and Cultural Studies, adjunct distinguished professor of anthropology, and director of the program in cultural studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Internationally renowned for his research in cultural theory, communication, and postmodernism, he largely focuses on youth culture and popular music in his work. Grossberg is coeditor of New Keywords: A Revised Vocabulary of Culture and Society and the international journal Cultural Studies. He has authored or edited (alone or with others) 20 books, and published close to 200 essays. He has written, among other works, We Gotta Get Out of This Place: Popular Conservatism and Postmodern Culture; Dancing In Spite of Myself: Essays on Popular Culture; and Caught in the Crossfire: Kids, Politics and America’s Future. His work has been translated into 10 languages, and he has lectured all over the world. Grossberg has won the highest awards for both scholarship and mentorship from the National Communication Association and the International Communication Association.
