Bard's TLS Nicaragua Project Presents a Lecture by Mayor of Chacraseca

BARD’S TRUSTEE LEADER SCHOLAR’S NICARAGUA PROJECT PRESENTS A LECTURE BY MAYOR OF CHACRASECA ON APRIL 26 ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—The Nicaragua Project, a Trustee Leader Scholar (TLS) program at Bard College, presents a lecture by Juan Enrique Canales, the mayor of Chacraseca, Nicaragua, on Thursday, April 26. Free and open to the public, the program begins at 8:30 p.m. in room 102 of the F. W. Olin Humanities Building. In addition to the lecture, there will be a slide presentation of the Nicaragua Project’s work in Chacraseca. The TLS Nicaragua Project helps to build houses in Chacraseca, an impoverished rural area on the western coast of Nicaragua. For the past six years, every January over winter break, a group of Bard students volunteer alongside a construction crew, to build houses, while living with local families. “This past January, thanks to close collaboration with Mayor Canales, we were able to build three houses,” explains Jonathan Raye, director of the project. “While doing this, we’ve learned about a variety of community development projects in Chacraseca. Through the presentation at Bard we hope to help raise funds on behalf of these causes.” The Nicaragua Project works in conjunction with the Maryknoll Nuns of Chacraseca and the Chacraseca municipal government. It costs $1450 to hire a contractor and crew and pay for materials for one house. Since fall of 2002, Bard students have raised enough money to build over a dozen houses. The Trustee Leader Scholar Program provides opportunities for motivated students to develop their organizational and leadership skills through the design and implementation of service projects that promote energetic involvement in campus life and cultivate relationships between Bard College and its surrounding communities, local and international.
