Bard Graduate Programs To Hold Open House on November 12
Bard Center for Environmental Policy
The Bard Center for Environmental Policy (BCEP) was founded in 1999 to foster education, research, and public discussion on critical environmental issues. Through its academic and public programs, BCEP addresses local, national, and global policy issues pertaining to the natural and built environments. At the core of the Center’s activities is the graduate program, which leads to a M.S. degree or a professional certificate in environmental policy. This rigorous, interdisciplinary curriculum, based at Bard’s Annandale-on-Hudson campus, prepares graduates to enter government, business, or nonprofit organizations as skilled mediators between the world of science and the political, economic, legal, and social forces that shape environmental policy. A full-time, professional internship is an integral part of the training during the second year. In conjunction with Bard’s Master of Arts in Teaching Program, BCEP offers a two-year, dual-degree program leading to the M.S. and M.A.T. degrees. A joint program with Pace University Law School gives students the opportunity to complete an M.S. degree in environmental policy and a J.D. degree in environmental law. Bard Graduate Center for Studies in the Decorative Arts, Design, and Culture
The founding of the Bard Graduate Center for Studies in the Decorative Arts, Design, and Culture (BGC) in the fall of 1993 created an institutional home for the study of the material past as a key for understanding the creation of culture. Combining the object-centered vision of the curator with the question-driven perspective of the university professor, the curricular approach of the BGC evades the professional and disciplinary boundaries that so often keep the most interesting questions obscured from view. The M.A. and Ph.D. programs offer an encyclopedic approach to the study of the material world, drawing on methodologies from art and design history, economic and cultural history, and the history of technology, philosophy, anthropology, and archaeology. Center for Curatorial Studies
The graduate program at the Center for Curatorial Studies (CCS) provides practical training and experience in a museum setting and an intensive two-year course of study in the history of the contemporary visual arts, institutions, and practices of exhibition, and theory and criticism of the visual arts in the modern period. Broadly interdisciplinary, the program faculty includes curators and other museum professionals, scholars in the humanities and social sciences, artists, and critics. The M.A. degree curriculum is designed to deepen students’ understanding of the intellectual and practical tasks of curating exhibitions of contemporary art, particularly in the complex social and cultural situations of present-day arts institutions. A recent expansion of the Center’s facility enlarged the library and created the Hessel Museum of Art, a 17,000-square-foot building for exhibitions curated from the Marieluise Hessel Collection of more than 1,700 works on permanent loan to CCS Bard. With its gallery space, extensive library and curatorial archive, and access to the Marieluise Hessel Collection, CCS Bard offers students an intellectual grounding and actual experience within a museum. www.bard.edu/ccs
The International Center of Photography–Bard Program in Advanced Photographic Studies
The International Center of Photography (ICP)–Bard Program in Advanced Photographic Studies, founded in 2003, awards an M.F.A. degree in photography, in collaboration with the Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts. The two-year program, which is based at the ICP facilities in Manhattan, offers a rigorous exploration of all aspects of photography through an integrated curriculum of five components: studio practice; seminars in which students integrate what they are learning into their own creative work; professional practice, consisting of internships with leading professional photographers and photography organizations; critical study, in which students focus on theoretical and critical issues in the history of photography; and master classes with distinguished photographers. Master of Arts in Teaching Program
The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) Program at Bard College was founded in 2003. The core of this yearlong program is an integrated curriculum leading to a M.A.T. degree and a teaching certificate for grades 7–12 in one of four areas: literature, mathematics, biology, or history. Having completed an undergraduate degree in their chosen field, incoming students continue their studies in that field while they take education courses that challenge them to apply the results of research and pedagogical analysis to the actual work of teaching. Combined with student-teaching experiences spread over the full academic year and the active participation of mentor teachers and MAT faculty advisers, the program’s instructionally innovative courses provide the basis for critical reflection on educational practice. Fellowships from the Carroll and Milton Petrie Foundation and MfA Fellowships from Math for America are available to students committed to teaching in New York City public schools. In conjunction with the Bard Center for Environmental Policy, the MAT Program offers a dual-degree curriculum leading to the M.A.T. and M.S. degrees. The program also offers an alternative two-year program that allows students to complete the M.A.T. degree on a mostly part-time basis. Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts
The Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts, founded in 1981, offers an interdisciplinary program leading to the M.F.A. degree. For three intensive summer sessions, artists from a variety of fields live and work on the Bard campus in an environment that encourages proficiency in their work and recognizes the importance of engaged discussion to the artistic process. During the eight-week sessions, the day-to-day focus is on each student’s process and work in progress as he or she confronts the conceptual and practical questions that are at the core of all artistic production. Artists work individually, in conferences with faculty and visiting artists, in caucuses within the artist’s discipline, and in seminars and critiques with the whole M.F.A. community. www.bard.edu/mfa
Graduate Program in Vocal Arts
The Graduate Program in Vocal Arts at The Bard College Conservatory of Music is a two-year master of music degree program conceived by soprano Dawn Upshaw. The course work is designed to support a broad-based approach to a singing career that extends from standard repertory to new music, as well as core seminars that introduce and tie together the historical/cultural perspective, analytical tools, and performance skills that distinguish vocal and operatic performances at the highest level. It also includes a strong practical component with seminars and classes on career skills led by distinguished figures in arts management and administration. The core faculty—master voice teachers, coaches, and instructors in Alexander Technique, movement, and diction—is supplemented by guest artists drawn from the professional musical world. Upshaw acts as teacher and mentor to help students realize their full artistic and professional potential. She is in residence at least three times each semester for intensive work with students in individual coaching sessions and master classes. www.bard.edu/vap
