Bard Student Jane Wong Wins Fulbright Bard College senior Jane Wong has won a prestigious Fulbright scholarship for her work in creative writing.

Bard Student Jane Wong Wins Fulbright

Awarded for Creative Writing Study In Hong Kong
ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—Bard College senior Jane Wong of Tinton Falls, New Jersey, has won a prestigious 2007–2008 Fulbright scholarship for her work in creative writing. Wong will spend 10 months of funded study in Hong Kong. She plans to use the intensive time and space provided by the scholarship to write a new creative manuscript, primarily consisting of a novella and short stories. “I’m interested in working in Hong Kong due to its bilingualism and evolving relationship to China,” says Wong. “Language has always been an important element in my life, including the spaces between which people can or cannot communicate with each other due to language barriers. In terms of Hong Kong as a highly international and English-speaking country, I am also interested in writing about the creation of a national identity. This is exciting to me as a Chinese American, which is itself a fluid identity in the United States.” The Fulbright U.S. Student Program will grant Wong a stipend of $29,000 and a research allowance of $500. The program offers fellowships to recent bachelor’s graduates, master’s and doctoral students, young professionals, and artists for study and research abroad. In academic year 2006–2007, the Fulbright Program offered either full or partial support to more than 1,200 Americans studying abroad. The Fulbright Program, as it is widely known, is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government. It is designed to “increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.” With this goal, the Fulbright Program has provided more than 273,000 participants—chosen for their leadership potential—with the opportunity to observe others’ political, economic, educational and cultural institutions, to exchange ideas, and to embark on joint ventures of importance to the general welfare of the world.
