Bard College is pleased to announce that Walter Russell Mead has been appointed as a Senior Scholar at the Center for Civic Engagement and at the Hannah Arendt Center. Mead was previously the James Clarke Chace Professor of Foreign Affairs and the Humanities at Bard. In his new role at the College, Mead will engage with students in Washington DC, Annandale-on-Hudson, and across the Bard network, and work with the leadership of both the Center for Civic Engagement and the Hannah Arendt Center for Politics and Humanities at Bard College to bring interesting and controversial discussions to the Bard campus, ensuring that our students are exposed to a range of challenging perspectives on important global and domestic issues.
Walter Russell Mead has taught at Bard since 2005, most recently holding title of the James Clarke Chace Professor of Foreign Affairs and the Humanities at Bard College. After almost a quarter-century of teaching at Bard, he recently accepted a position at the Hamilton Center at the University of Florida as the Alexander Hamilton Distinguished Professor of Strategy and Statecraft. Mead also holds roles as the Ravenel B. Curry III Distinguished Fellow in Strategy and Statesmanship at Hudson Institute, and the “Global View” columnist at the Wall Street Journal. He has served as the Henry A. Kissinger Senior Fellow for US Foreign Policy at the Council on Foreign Relations. His award-winning books include Special Providence: American Foreign Policy and How It Changed the World; God and Gold: Britain, America and the Making of the Modern World, and The Arc of A Covenant: The United States, Israel, and the Fate of the Jewish People. He is a graduate of Yale University.
“While I’ll miss teaching at Bard and advising Senior Projects, this isn’t a goodbye or even a farewell,” said Mead. “I’m happy that I’ll be continuing to work with Bard students and the wider Bard community as a senior scholar with the Arendt Center and the Center for Civic Engagement. Bard’s uncompromising support of intellectual freedom combined with a culture of civil discourse help make it a unique and uniquely valuable institution. It’s an honor to be part of this community.”
