Biography:

B.A., Princeton University. Critic, author of biographies of Italian actress Eleonora Duse and composer Giuseppe Verdi, as well as several books on 19th-century Italian opera. Translator of many contemporary Italian writers of fiction, including Italo Calvino, Primo Levi, and Umberto Eco. Recipient, PEN Medal, National Book Award, and others. Honorary degrees from University of Leicester (UK) and Trinity College (Connecticut). Member, American Academy of Arts and Letters. (1992–2008) Professor Emeritus of Literature.
